The film "The Life of David Gale": reviews. "The Life of David Gale" (2003): reviews, description, photo

The criminal-political drama with the ambiguous title "The Life of David Gale", the trailer of which only for 2 minutes immerses the viewer in a shocking and frightening atmosphere of the tape, is smeared with injustice and tragedy.

Best Movie by Alan Parker

British filmmaker Alan Parker is known for a wide audience of paintings through which the motif of upholding human dignity in a fight with various injustices of society, the established system: the Mississippi in the Fire, Midnight Express, Come to See Paradise, Ptah and others. Parker released "The Life of David Gale", the reviews fell down at once and unanimously reiterated that the director proved that his performances are realistic and dynamic, such in modern Hollywood are extremely rare. The author's unique style of the director notably distinguishes him among his colleagues, not a grammar of finesse, everything in moderation and everything is natural.

Roll call with "Silence of the Lambs"

"The Life of David Gale," the filmmakers' reviews as evidence, also narrates the story of David Gale, who fell victim to his convictions and attempts to confront the established foundations. The whole picture is based on meetings of the prisoner on charges of murdering the protagonist with the reporter Beatsi, and events from the life of the suicide bomber. When viewing, one can involuntarily feel a sense of association with the cult film "The Silence of the Lambs", in which the newcomer Clariss Sterling comprehends the ruthless realities of life under the strict guidance of the maniac-cannibal Lecter. At the same time, watching the beginning of the film "The Life of David Gale", the trailer in particular, the viewer ambiguously perceives the main character Gale, who can hardly be called a maniac. Although something is alarming in his appearance, which is later explained by the deep depression of the movie hero, because he lost almost everything.

The cast is the key to success

Before giving the main character to Kevin Spacey, director Alan Parker as contenders considered the eternally sad Nicolas Cage and the fatal handsome George Clooney. Would have won from this or lost the film "The Life of David Gale" - reviews of critics would be shown immediately after viewing. But most kinogurmanov converges in the opinion that none of the eminent actors could not live and bring to the viewer David Gale as did the mysterious Kevin Spacey. It has a dark mystery, an inner strength, an attractive magic. After all, even when the actor simply sits silently in the frame, the viewer, despite the distance, feels all the thoughts and emotions of the hero. It is worth noting and the male actors of the second plan - Gabriel Mann, who managed to get along well in the role, and Matt Craven (Dusty Wright), who fearlessly ran the car during the scene of a steep pursuit, not yielding to stunt professionals.

Ladies do not concede

Alan Parker starring Nicole Kidman was seen as the main female star, but the capricious actress flatly refused to take part in the shootings. And the film "The Life of David Gale" received a spectacular Kate Winslet as an actress in the forefront. She cherished the story of her character, Beatsi Bloom, a rather young journalist, who had already won a scandalous reputation. Kate incredibly emotionally played a reporter, trying to get to the bottom of the truth in all ways. During the timing of the picture it seems that you feel all the shades of emotions of her character, but until the end you can not understand whether she will be able to prevent a fatal mistake. Looking through the picture "The Life of David Gale," the audience's comments, you often meet laudatory odes about Laura Linney, who introduced the character of a social movement activist who opposes the death penalty.

The plot, almost without spoiling

So, the film "The Life of David Gale" begins with the fact that the main character is immediately positioned as a scoundrel, murderer-rapist, who received a death sentence and is now waiting for its execution. Rather, the first frames show the viewer boundless field of Texas, running on the road a woman with a video cassette in her hands and ignoring her, a passing truck. This is how the acquaintance with the main heroine Bloom, who last four days is permitted to visit Gale and who should take the last interview from the convict, is going on. David tells the girl how, as a university professor, he was engaged in human rights activities aimed at abolishing the death penalty in the glorious state of Texas. Soon, the man is fired because of "podstavy" student Beurlin, who accused the professor of sexual harassment and rape.

Trouble as a snowball

Because of this, the hero's wife leaves for another, the ideological associates of the organization "Protection from Death" shun David, and he begins to abuse alcohol. All his misadventures grow like a snowball, and now he is behind bars on charges of cruel murder of the faithful partner Constance Harraway, with whom he fought side by side for a long time with Governor Hardin, an ardent supporter of extreme punishment. But Betsy is against David and is not at all sure that he was a victim of political games because of his views and convictions.

That's where the "dog is buried"

The film "The Life of David Gale" quite deservedly can be attributed to the category of "film with an unexpected ending." After all, the culminating moment completely refutes the whole previous two-hour timing, forcing the viewer to look at the narrated from a completely different angle. But do not expect any mysticism like the "Sixth Sense", rather, this decisive breakdown is similar to the twist of the intellectual drama "Suspects person" in which the hero of the same Spacey turns out to be a chameleon person, capable of merging with the crowd of a criminal. The verdict is unambiguous - an unexpected culmination will surprise even the most ingenious viewer, not even suggesting how vicious the mind of an individual is. Such a surprise is prepared by "The Life of David Gale", the ending of which makes clear the scattered and chronographed hidden and explicit quotations about two different Jude, indirect references to the works of Jorge Luis Borges "The theme of the traitor and the hero" and "Three versions of the betrayal of Judas." After this, Parker's tape instantly wants to look again, which, undeniably, happens very rarely.

There is no truth. There are only points of view

"The Life of David Gale" (2003) is really a difficult and deep drama, strong and unequivocal, the essence of which is a sacrifice in the name of something great, which the heroes of this story sincerely believed. Despite the failure of the film at the box office, the true connoisseurs of cinema will certainly like it, because the movie touches to the very depths of the soul. And immediately after viewing it is unrealistic to say at least one word. The film "The Life of David Gale", reviews of which are extremely controversial, causes tears, it captures the spirit. The film makes you think seriously about the value of human life, about the advisability of the death penalty. Emotional tension enhances the brilliant musical accompaniment, especially the soundtrack "Almost Martyrs". Music complements this masterpiece in conjunction with excellent direction, a great script, written dialogs and delightful acting. You can safely recommend the film for viewing, this movie can not be missed.
