Smolny Institute of Noble Maidens. Historical reference

There is a long tradition. According to him, Empress Elizabeth Petrovna planned at the end of her life to move to a quiet monastery. Responsible for the creation of the project and the erection of the building was appointed Francesco Bartolomeo Rastrelli. The essence of the idea was to build a convent at the place where the Smolny Palace was located. The laying of the foundation took place in the middle of the 18th century. The plan, drawn up by the architect, required a lot of expenses. At that time, the Seven Years War began, there was not enough money to complete the construction. As a result, the monastery was never used for its intended purpose. Only in 1764 the Smolny Institute was opened. The architect V.P. Stasov continued to work on the cathedral.

The development of events after the death of the Empress

In subsequent years, the fate of the Smolny Monastery was in the hands of Catherine II. She decided to dispose of it in her own way. At that time in the Russian Empire there was not a single institution in which girls could be trained. Noble daughters were educated mainly at home. At the same time, girls from poor families did not study at all. For this reason, the Empress decided to open the "Educational Society" in the monastery. So the Smolny Institute of Noble Maidens began its existence . A special decree was issued on the opening of the institution. It said that the building of the Smolny Institute will henceforth be used to enable women to receive education. In the future, they could become exemplary mothers, useful members of the family and society.
