Regional Vologda Library. Babushkina is a large scientific and cultural center of the north-west of Russia

Vologda was first mentioned in chronicles in 1147. The settlement, located 450 km from Moscow, is not only a major city in the north-west of Russia, but also one of the important transport hubs of this region. In addition, it is the administrative and scientific center of the region. The significance of it as a hotbed of culture and a city with a special historical and architectural heritage is evidenced by the fact that there are 224 monuments in Vologda, 128 of them are under state protection.

Reading Education

A striking indicator of the level of the culture of the city is the Vologda Regional Library named after him. Babushkina, who has an interesting history. Unveiled officially in 1919 under the name of the Vologda Soviet Public Library, it was originally filled with volumes of a more substantial age. Nationalized private libraries of noble estates, books from two monasteries (Spaso-Sumorin in Totma and Veliky Ustyug Mikhailo-Arkhangelsk), local and nearby spiritual seminaries, gymnasiums, gendarmerie administration, church parishes - all these treasures were inherited by the future regional Vologda library. Grandmother's. The work on collecting books was carried out so vigorously that 1500 volumes, which the library possessed at the time of its opening, in half a year turned into a well-organized fund of 15,000 copies. Petrograd provided considerable assistance.

True ascetics

The work of the team, consisting of 12 people, was so productive that the library quickly reaches the provincial level. The activity of the library staff was selfless - along with the collection of books, their systematization and the compilation of catalogs, the main focus was on scientific and educational activities. The library worked from 11 am to 12 noon. Originally the book depository was located in the building of the former Nobility Assembly. During the first year of work the reading room was visited by 2608 people, up to 50 people daily. And only in 1922 the future regional Vologda library. Babushkina begins to give books to the house, which significantly expands her audience. Actually, the book depository grew and expanded in the prewar years as well as in dozens of regional libraries. Fund replenishment took place primarily due to the literature and periodicals produced in the region. At the library there were directions, which, being improved, became independent departments. As, for example, a reference table or a bibliographic commission. In 1938 the Vologda region was formed, and the library acquired a new status.

Military and post-war exploits

During the war years, the work of the institution was also usual for libraries that are not in the occupied territories - it served the readers. They were the wounded, hospitalized and sanitary trains, workers of defense enterprises, inhabitants of the rear. Later, small libraries were allocated from the repository and transferred to the liberated areas from the invaders. A total of 37,000 volumes were issued from the funds for the formation of 62 libraries. Immediately after the war, the library gets a second wind - the number of readers is steadily growing, new forms of work appear regularly, the book depository becomes a major scientific center. And the question arises of a new room. The question of the construction of a standard building for 500 thousand volumes is decided positively, and in 1963, on December 24, the city receives a gift for the New Year in 1964: the library is given the rank of a fellow revolutionary who died in 1906. Since that time, the Vologda Oblast Regional Library. Babushkina receives a new status. It becomes a state, scientific, universal profile. It is located at: ul. M. Ulyanova, house 1.

The current stage of development

The next, the third stage in the life of the regional book depository began on the day of celebration of its 80th anniversary, when a new building with its remarkable history was presented to the library by the decision of the governor. Built in the very beginning of the 20th century in the then fashionable "modern" style, the building in its walls saw and heard performances of both domestic and foreign stars of the first magnitude. Writers, poets, ballerinas, religious figures and orchestras - they all performed in the building where the regional library is now. Here, under a new roof, located nearby - st. M. Ulyanova, house 7, the departments connected with media and Internet resources are moving. The beautiful hall of the new building, equipped with modern acoustic means, hosts seminars and scientific conferences, exhibitions and presentations, concerts, meetings and literary evenings.

Now the fund of the library totals 1.2 million books. The style of working with readers has changed. Library them. Babushkina currently, with a general increase in the number of readers, virtual visitors serves up to 550 thousand a year. There are about 350 thousand real visitors. VOUNB since 1994 - a member of the Russian Library Association, so here in 2009 there was a major forum - the XIV annual conference of the RBA.

From 1989 to 2012, the Vologda Library was run by Nelly Nikolaevna Belova. Two Tatyana Nikolaevna - Kryukova and Bukhartseva - are (respectively) her predecessor and successor.
