Postmodernism in architecture: 3 examples

Do you like terminological disputes? Many will agree that it is hard to find a job more boring. Therefore, in this article there will be more examples than abstruse theoretical research. But the definition of the term "postmodernism in architecture" is still worth giving. To begin with, postmodernism in most cases refers to similar cultural and social phenomena of the second half of the 20th century. In architecture, he expressed himself in amazing inventions, the theatrical-gaming start and complex figurative associations. The language of architectural forms has become richer, and volumes and compositions are more expressive. Simply put, supporters of postmodernism returned art to the then architecture. And now let's move on to the examples.

"Dancing House"

This building is located in Prague. It was built during 1994-1996. Under the project of Vlad Milunovich and Frank Gary. The architecture of postmodernism has been reflected in this structure more than fully. The building is called dancing, as the architects tried to portray a couple of famous dancers - F. Astera and D. Rogers.

"Dancing House" consists of two towers - curved and ordinary. The glass part of the building that faces the street is a woman in a fluttering dress, while the part of the house deployed towards the river is a man in a cylinder. The atmosphere is enhanced by jumping and dancing windows. The last architectural technique is directly connected with the works of Mondrian, with his picture "Boogie Woogie on Broadway". Postmodernism in the architecture of the described building is noticeable in dynamic lines and asymmetrical transformations.

Grand piano house with a violin

In 2007, a house in the form of a piano and a violin was built in the Chinese city of Huainan. Many architects point out that postmodernism is very pronounced in this building. The architecture of the royal house is a modern shock. His design was carried out by students of Hefei University of Technology and the architectural studio "Huainan Fangkai Decoration Project Co".

The architectural composition of the structure includes 2 musical instruments, which are performed on a scale of 1:50 and are copies of the piano and violin. The forms chosen by architects allowed to connect symbolism with utilitarian functions. In particular, the shape of the piano made it possible to qualitatively distribute space for the exhibition complex, while the form of the violin allowed to place the staircase to the halls. The combination of aesthetics with practical requirements - this is the postmodernism in architecture.

"Humpbacked House"

One of the most vivid examples of postmodernism is the "Humpbacked House", located in the Polish city of Sopot. This building is part of the shopping center and erected by the project of Jacek Karnowski. Sketches for the future structure were created by Pierre Dahlberg and Jan Shanser. The purpose of the building is quite trivial - attracting new customers. At one time, "Humpbacked House" received the title of the best architectural idea of Poland. The main feature of this structure is the complete absence of straight lines and regular angles. Even its balconies have the form of sea waves. Having seen this fairy-tale house, you will immediately understand what post-modernism in architecture is.
