The fate of the state

The history of the archipelago is unique in something: the islands were able to avoid early conquests and assimilation with the invaders. Until the 16th century, no one even knew where Palau was located. The Spaniards, who pestered its shores, were absolutely not interested in this territory and left it safely, leaving the aborigines alone with nature. And the first contact with civilized Europeans occurred at the end of the XVIII century, and then only because of the collapse of an English ship near the shores of the island of Ulong. Civilization rudely broke into the ancient structure of life of local inhabitants, and already at the end of the XIX century the territories moved to Germany. The First World War changed the course of history - the Japanese came to the islands, and then the Americans established themselves here. Nowadays, the territory has received the status of a republic, the new capital of Palau is the city of Melekeok.
