Net weight and gross weight

The words "net" and "gross" today firmly established themselves in the Russian language. Hardly anyone knows what those "newcomers" from Italy mean.

The word "net" in the translation sounds like "clean". In combination, "net weight", it has the semantic load as "net weight, without package or packaging". Actually, at this stage, usually the knowledge of the borrowed word from the layman ends.

But if we consider not the combination of "net weight" but, for example, the expression "net income", then the conclusion suggests itself: net income, that is, net profit calculated by subtracting from the gross income all costs and investments, as well as the cost of raw materials , If the talk is about production.

Sometimes in the phrase "net weight" the word "weight" is replaced by the word "price". Then the expression means the final price, from which all possible discounts have already been calculated, or there were no discounts for this product.

Usually the net weight is indicated on top of the package of the goods. This is done for the convenience of the goods receivers in the outlets and forwarders. Unloading the machine with boxes, they do not need to drag them to the scales, release them from packaging and outweigh, losing time and energy. It's enough just to pay attention to the label pasted from above.

The word "gross" is antonym "netto". It also came to us from Italy. But it is translated as "rough, unclean". Gross weight means the total, total weight of the goods together with the packaging or containers. Often, these data are recorded on labels.

It may seem superfluous for the uninitiated to be so scrupulous. Who needs this total weight when accepting the goods? After all, the packaging will still be recycled, it will not be sold to customers!

However, it is necessary to know the gross weight of those who carry large quantities of goods. Even an ordinary box from under the cookie draws on the scales 400, or even all 600 grams! Having loaded 100 such boxes into the vehicle, the car receives 40 kg of load, which differs with the indicated net weight of the goods transported.

And if the delivery of goods is made in a large supermarket, where do you need to import 1000 boxes of weight candy, gingerbread and cookies? 400 kg of unrecorded packaging material can overload the car above the put, which is fraught with breakdowns and accidents. And if you do not take into account the weight of wood or polypropylene packaging, which can make a difference in a ton or more?

And also the net weight and gross is necessary for the utilizers. Knowing these data, as well as the number of units received, they do not need to outweigh the empty container in order to know its weight. It is enough to make simple calculations - subtract from the gross weight gross net weight - and the resulting figure will indicate how much tare was accumulated in the warehouse.

You can multiply the difference between the gross and net of one commodity unit by the number - the result will be the same. Again, there is a saving of energy and time.

The question arises as to why the recycler needs to know the weight of the used packaging. Firstly, in order to choose the transport of the required load capacity. Secondly, cardboard, paper, polypropylene and polyethylene can be handed over to the receiving point of recyclables and to help out with this a certain amount.

So, net weight is the net weight of the product without packaging, which it is necessary for the forwarders and receivers of the goods to know. Gross weight is the total weight of the cargo being transported, which drivers of road haulers should know. And the difference between these two data is of interest to the utilizers.
