Mushroom deer horns: description, distribution, edibility

Mushroom deer horns (coral, hornet) in scientific terms is called golden or yellow ramaria. The fact is that these are two different species, but so similar that only experienced biologists can distinguish them in the laboratory. The morphological data and taste qualities of these species are almost identical. Mushroom deer horns can often be found in pine forests on white moss. Often there are very large specimens - weighing about 1 kg. Sometimes, in order to prepare a dinner for the whole family, only a few slingshots are enough. The worms do not impress this macromycete, except for the wireworm. An interesting fact is that many "quiet hunters" pass by these amazing mushrooms, not even suspecting that they are edible.

Edibility

Mushrooms deer horns, despite its exotic appearance, are edible. They are classified as the fourth mushroom category. It is best to eat young specimens. Old mushrooms have an unpleasant aftertaste, and bitterness also appears in them. Mushroom deer horns used in cooking for cooking various dishes. They have an unusually tender flesh.

Description

Reindeer horns are mushrooms, the body of which grows upright and resembles a branching sea coral or reindeer antlers, for which they received their national names. The average specimen width is 7-16 cm, but there are fungi exceeding 20 cm wide. An interesting fact is that their height, as a rule, coincides with the width. The staining is yellow, golden yellow or light brown. In older specimens, it is bright orange.

Flesh is golden-white, watery, very fragile and tender, with a pleasant smell. In air, with a break or a cut, it quickly changes color to brown (with a red tinge). In overripe mushrooms, when pressing down on the stem, the flesh acquires a red or blood red color. Fruit body consists of many twigs with blunt tips. Externally, the macromycete resembles a coral. Its surface is dry, smooth and matte.

Spread

Mushroom deer horns are common in the temperate and northern belts of Eurasia and North America. It grows in groups, prefers mossy and moist soil in coniferous, mixed and deciduous forests. Sometimes it forms large communities, can grow in rows or arcs, forming "witch's rings". Especially the hornet likes pine forests, but it does not disdain the beech-hornbeam massifs. Occurs in the lower and middle belt of the mountains. The optimal time for collection is August-October. In the southern regions deer horns are collected even in winter.

Features

Deer horns, or ramaria golden (yellow), there are quite a few twins - coral-like fungi similar to them. However, they are all inedible, and some are poisonous. For an experienced person it is not difficult to distinguish a hornet from another. However, if the mushroom picker does not have too much experience or is a novice in general, it is better not to "hunt" for mushrooms of deer horns. Photos are available in this article.
