Mehmed son of Suleiman. Biography: life and death

Shehzadeh Mehmed is the son of Suleiman the Magnificent. His biography is known to the general public not least because of the palace intrigues of his mother, the Slavs of Hurrem. Yes, the same concubine Suleiman I, who is known in our country (and in the rest of Europe) under the name of Roksolana. In addition, Shehzadeh Mehmed is the son of Suleiman, whose biography also became widely known recently due to the popular TV series "The Magnificent Age". Be that as it may, the name of this hero of Turkish history is heard today. And for sure many of us were asking ourselves: who was the prototype of the character who was superbly beaten in the well-known TV series?

Mehmed son of Suleiman. Biography of early years and origin

Shehzadeh was the son of one of the greatest sultans of the Ottoman Empire at the time of its heyday and concubine with Ukrainian roots, which became a favorite of the ruler. Anastasia-Alexandra (according to the versions of various historians) came from a peasant family of an Orthodox priest from the town of Rogatin, which is in modern Western Ukraine. Between 1517 and 1520 years she falls into captivity during one of the Tatar raids, and a little later finds himself in the harem of Suleiman. Here she was given the name of Hurrem. Roksolana was named by one of the Ottoman ambassadors at the Turkish court. Very soon the girl becomes the beloved concubine of the Sultan, and in 1521 Mehmed, son of Suleiman, was born. Biography of the boy from an early age is full of intrigues and cruelties. The fact is that his mother was not the first wife of the ruler. Moreover, he himself was not his first son. However, Roksolana, being quite ambitious woman, did much to make her son become the next heir to the throne. For many years, she was in conflict with the other wives of the Sultan, especially in the case of Mahiedevan, which affected the upbringing and early life of her son.

Mehmed son of Suleiman. Biography: Sultan viceroy

When the young Mehmed turned 20 years old (in 1541), the sultan suddenly dismisses the governor of Manisa, his first son Mustafa, and appoints Mehmed instead. In the Turkish tradition, the heirs who were preparing this way learned the skills of administrative management, performing the duties of the governor in small provinces. And in medieval Europe, this practice was very common. The post of governor in Manisa was traditionally regarded in the Ottoman Empire as the unofficial place of the future heir to the throne. Therefore, his father's act most likely meant that now it is Mehmed who is regarded as the future sultan. However, this was destined to happen. After only two years, Shehzadeh dies of an unknown disease. The most popular version, which has survived to this day, indicates smallpox. Moreover, the assumptions that he could be infected by Mahidernan, one of the concubines of the Sultan, who lost the competition for his heart to Mehmed's mother, Roksolana, are very serious. However, the son of Sultan Suleiman Mehmed, whose biography was so short, managed to leave behind a daughter who lived a long life in the palace of the dynasty. It is also interesting to note that Roksolana still achieved her: not Mehmed, and her youngest son, Selim, became the next ruler of the empire.
