The boys try to get rid of the new commander in every possible way. He also tries to impress the charming Miss Wolburn, instilling in himself humanity and telling the youngest pupil the most delicate tales of the murdered Vietnamese. Unexpectedly, the boys and the major are imbued with mutual sympathy. Payne helps them to win at prestigious military competitions, and they to him - to become kinder and sentimental. This unexpected finale even conceals something touching in itself. He confirms that united efforts lead to victory, real friendship can overcome many things, and love can do even better than an inveterate soldier and open up new sides in it.
