Magnet-link: what is and how to open it

In this article we will talk about a term such as a magnet link. What is this, you will learn by reading the article to the end. Also, the device of this link and the method of its application will be told.

What is a magnet link?

Magnet-link - what is this and how to work with it? It's very simple, even more, if you work at a computer for a long time, then, most likely, you have repeatedly encountered links of this kind. But even if it is not, now you will find all the answers to the questions.

The Internet at the most is an information exchange environment. You are used to consuming information from it by reading or viewing any materials. However, the term "consumption" is great for uploading files, because any file in itself contains some kind of information.

Most often, downloading a file looks easy, you click the "Download" button on the site and in the browser, in the "Downloads" section, the download file appears. However, there is another way to download, not using a browser, but using a torrent client. It's the torrent-client that starts the download after receiving that magnet link.

In simple words, a magnet link is a normal code that carries in itself various information about a file: name, size, and so on. These links work with torrent clients, and some can not exist without others. It is the file with the extension .torrent that carries the magnet-link.

Programs for working with magnet-links

So, we figured out what the magnet-link is, how to open it, let's talk now. It has already been mentioned above that a torrent client will be required for work, but in brief. Now we will analyze this question in more detail.

Initially, let's talk about DC-clients. Some of the most popular ones are EiskaltDC ++, FlylinkDC ++ and GreyLink. Work with them proceeds as follows:

  1. On the Internet you get a magnet-link to the file you need.

  2. Copy it.

  3. Enter it into the DC client.

  4. The download begins.

As you can see, the algorithm of actions is simple. In EiskaltDC ++, the link is entered on the path "File - Open the magnet link", but there are also hot keys: Ctrl + I. In the other two presented clients: "File - Enter a magnetic link ..." or Ctrl + M.

After the done manipulations in the DC client, a magnet link opens, what is the load and how it happens, we think, it is not necessary to explain.

In general, torrent clients open the same way. But their plus is that they do not need to be adjusted, they are immediately ready for work. But the downside is the low download speed. Decide which client to use.

Configuring the client

Above it was said that the magnet link for the torrent includes the code and the fact that the client itself needs to be configured. Now just about this we'll talk.

Setting up something complicated does not represent itself, now you will see for yourself. Even more, in most cases, it is not needed at all, but still it is worth telling.

It is best to first make it so that the client associates the magnet link. "What is this?" - you ask. And nothing complicated, just the links will automatically open in the client. To do this, go to the settings and find the "General" tab. It is here that look for the line "Associate with a magnet URL" or something like that and put a tick. In the event that the field is inactive, then the association is not needed.

You also need to enable DHT. It's simple, we find the same line and put a tick.

You can also set the default path in the same tab where all files will be downloaded. In case you do not want to do this, the folder will be selected by itself.

Working with links in a browser

It's time to tell how to work with links in browsers. In principle, nothing complicated in this.

  1. Firefox. As soon as you try to open the link, a window will appear. In it you will be asked to specify a program to open the link. If you have several, then choose the one you need and click "OK". Also pay attention to the line "Remember my choice", so that the next time this window does not appear.

  2. Internet Explorer. In this browser will also appear a window, only now you will be asked permission to use the software with links of this kind. Allow! Also, if you do not want to do this manipulation each time, you can remove the check mark from the line "Always ask when opening such addresses".

  3. Google Chrome. The algorithm of actions is the same as in Explorer, only a tick in front of "Remember my choice".

  4. Opera. Here everything is more complicated, you need to enter the "Menu", then in the "Settings", select "General settings", then "Advanced", go to "Programs" and click "Add". There will be a line "Protocol", in it it is necessary to enter "magnet".
