Leu - the national currency of Romania

The territory of modern Europe hides from us many secrets and mysteries. Perhaps, one of the most interesting for fans of myths and horrors is Romania. It is here, according to numerous legends and historical testimonies, the world-famous Count Dracula was born . Therefore it is absolutely clear that a huge number of tourists from all corners of the world seeks to get to the territory of the "vampire" lands. The main questions that travelers ask themselves: "What currency is in Romania? Is it possible to freely use and exchange dollars, euros or rubles?"

Union of Leu and the Euro

It is worth noting that this country is a member of the European Union. Therefore, we can immediately conclude that the weighty currency of Romania - is the euro. This will not be a mistake. However, this axiom requires explanations. Like many countries, Romania had its own national currency before joining the European Union. Gradually, the euro took a leading position in the commodity-money relations of many countries. But not in this country. The national currency of Romania is called leu. And it quite comfortably coexists with the European currency. Each lei includes 100 bans. The nominal value of one note is 0.22 euros.

History of the development of a currency unit

The national currency of Romania has a long history. For the first time this sign was put into circulation in 1867 by the order of the Turkish government, under whose yoke the country was at that time. The nominal value of one lei was equal to the value of a French franc made of gold. For the complete withdrawal of the latter, it took twenty-three years. And in 1890 the monetary unit of Romania gained the status of the only national currency.

Like other countries in Europe, this state suffered enormous losses during the fascist occupation. The economy of the state also suffered. To exit from a difficult situation, urgent reforms of the banking and financial spheres were needed. So, in August 1947, for seven days, the currency was issued. At the same time, twenty-one thousand old lei were given one new one. Five years later, in order to completely defeat the financial crisis, a new reform was needed, during which a new devaluation occurred. Now the currency of Romania was exchanged as follows:

  1. For the first thousand ten new bank notes were given.
  2. The second, and also the third, cost 5 lei, respectively.
  3. If someone owned a large amount of money, then for every next four hundred signs they gave one lei.

Existence in the Eurozone

In the third millennium, Romania was affected by the global financial crisis. In the course of improving economic policy, a new monetary reform was carried out . The result was the launching of a "fresh" lei (RON), which was exchanged at a rate of 1: 10000. The main difference between the bills of the new sample was the material used for their production, a special polymer. National Bank tickets are not torn, do not get wet, they are difficult to break, they are easy to use.

Along with the Romanian lei, the euro "walks" on the territory of the state. Banks accept also other foreign banknotes. The exchange rate in Romania in each bank is about the same. Therefore, you can safely take on a trip and dollars. It should be remembered that you can import only $ 50,000 into the country. At the same time, 49,000 of them must be declared. It is forbidden to export lei from Romania.
