Kolyma Lowland: characteristics

The Kolyma lowland is a flat relief form in the northeast of Asia, one of the components of the East Siberian lowland, its eastern part. The lowland is located on the territory of the Republic of Sakha (formerly Yakutia) in the Russian Federation. It is located between the basins of three rivers: Kolyma, Alazey and Bolshaya Chukchiia. In honor of the river. The Kolyma lowland and got its name.

The area occupies 170 thousand km in area. In the south it leads to the Chersky Range, in the west - to the Alazey plateau, in the east - to the Yukagir, in the north it extends to the East Siberian Sea.

Relief

The Kolyma lowland is limited by altitudes in the range of 50-100 m above sea level. Sites with a height of up to 300 m are rare, but they are insignificant and practically not remembered for tourists.

The relief of the Kolyma lowland is represented by permafrost-thermokarst forms, and the soils are loam and sandy loam. This area is mostly swamped, bogs are found everywhere. There are also many lakes in these places. The largest: Pavilon, Mogotov, Iligitkin. In the reservoirs, fish are found, and fishing is widespread and quite popular.

The Kolyma lowland has cryogenic (permafrost) forms of relief due to the permafrost of the ground : drill holes (hydrolakkolites), thermokarst dips, polygonal wings, ice sheets.

Climate

The climate of the territory is subarctic. It is characterized by a prolonged cold winter with occasional precipitation and a short summer. The territory can be divided into tundra and forest-tundra. In the first area, the summer lasts much longer, but the temperature does not rise above +10 degrees. For winter characterized by constant wind and snowstorms. Snow, as a rule, is located evenly.

Where is the Kolyma Lowland? In the area of constant bogging and permafrost. The territory is warmed up in the summer, a large amount of oxygen is released. It is connected with forests. The average temperature in winter is minus 10-15 degrees. For hiking trips this area will be ideal at any time of the year.

Flora and fauna

The region's flora is represented by deciduous woodlands in wetlands. In the north, the woodlands are replaced by grassy, and then arctic tundra.

The Kolyma lowland is home to animals such as lemmings, Arctic foxes, reindeer, white partridges and flocks of migratory birds in the summer. The northern territory of this area is used as a pasture for reindeer.
