Keyboard shortcuts (list)

Is it possible to use a laptop or a computer without a touchpad or mouse? Is it possible to open the program without using the menu? At first glance, it seems that it is impossible to accomplish this. But nevertheless, you can use the computer at full power without infinite clicks. In such cases, keyboard shortcuts come to the rescue. Proper use of their combinations makes it possible to save time considerably.

What are key combinations for?

Hot keys or keyboard shortcuts are the ability to interact with a personal computer only using the keyboard. Undoubtedly, for such a "communication", not accidental keyboard shortcuts are used. The operating system includes the actions that are called when certain keys are pressed.

Hot keys are used for more optimized work with a personal computer. These combinations are also called shortcut keys and keyboard accelerators.

Combinations are used most often in those cases when you have to work a lot with a mouse or touchpad. It's much faster to select an item from the drop-down menu by pressing one or two keys than repeatedly clicking on the file and searching for the desired item.

The keyboard accelerator also helps in working with text. The text editor "Word" recognizes several dozen combinations, pressing of which will cause a certain action: copying, pasting, bolding, underlining, page break and so on.

But the keyboard shortcuts also have a disadvantage. It is covered in the number of combinations. Remembering them all is very difficult. But even using the most popular will help to optimize the work with files, text, browser and dialog boxes.

Using modifier keys

Any owner of a personal computer or laptop noticed that the keyboard has keys that do not perform any function on their own. These include Ctrl, Shift and Alt. By clicking on them, you can not change anything in the system, the browser window or the text editor. But they are the modifier keys, thanks to which almost every key combination on the laptop or computer keyboard works.

Correct use of modifiers allows you to open quick access to the operating system settings. But such combinations work both globally and locally. With the right combination of buttons, you can create a new folder, rename the file, or completely disable the keyboard.

Change keyboard layout: change keyboard shortcut

All owners of personal computers working on the basis of the operating system "Windows" know about a combination of keys that helps to change the layout of the keyboard. In "Windows 10" by default two combinations Win + Space and Alt + Shift are used. However, not all are suitable for this option, so users want to change the key combination to change the keyboard layout.

To change the way you change the keyboard layout, you need to:

  • Open "Settings" from the "Start" menu.
  • Choose Time and Language.
  • Go to the "Region and Language".
  • In the window click on "Additional date and time settings, regional settings".
  • In "Language" select "Change input method".
  • In the menu located in the left part of the window, click on "Advanced options".
  • In the "Switching input methods" group, select "Change keyboard shortcuts".
  • In the dialog box that appears, click on "Change keyboard shortcuts" and enter new parameters.
  • Save the settings.

After applying the settings, the parameters will change, and you can change the layout using a new combination.

Enter special characters using the key combination

In some situations, you need to enter special characters that the standard computer keyboard does not provide. Combinations of keys and modifier, it seemed, also can not help.

What to do if you urgently need to insert a copyright symbol in the message or document, an arrow down, up or sideways, a note, a paragraph or paragraph sign ? There are two ways to enter these characters.

The first way is to work with the text editor "Word". To insert a special symbol, you need to open a new document, go to the "Tab" menu and select the "Symbol" item. From the list that appears, click on "Special Characters".

Next pops up a dialog box in which a list of all special characters will be presented. The user has to choose the right one. For a more convenient search, special symbols are grouped by subject: monetary units, punctuation marks, geometric figures, technical signs and so on.

To save time, the special characters window can be called Ctrl + Alt + "-".

The second way is keyboard shortcuts for characters. To enter special characters from the keyboard, you need to hold down the Alt key and enter a set of numbers. For example, Alt + 0169 is the code ©.

All codes are shown below.

How to lock a keyboard with a keyboard shortcut

Unfortunately, there is no single key combination on the Windows 7 keyboard that would allow you to lock only the keyboard. On some computers and laptops, the combination F11 + Esc can work. Sometimes manufacturers introduce into their products special combinations for such tasks. For example, all Acer notebooks lock the keyboard when you press Fn + F7.

But still it is possible to partially lock the keyboard on the computer. The combination of keys Win + L blocks not so much the keyboard itself, as the operating system. After pressing the keys, the user will be moved to the window for entering the password from the system and changing the account. Only those who know the password can log in again.
