How to use phantom power?

Phantom power is the transmission of information signals and power at the same time. In general, remote power is used in the event that it is not possible to connect to the mains 220 V. In recent years, such a system is increasingly used to power the security and telephone equipment. The phantom power supply unit can also be used successfully to connect a microphone, keyboard or electric guitar.

Depending on the method of feeding the supply voltage, there are two versions of this system. In the first case, the supply voltage is supplied via a separately laid cable or unused conductors of trunk cables. In the second case, it is routed over the backbone cable along with the Ethernet signal. In this case, additional cable conductors are not used.

Phantom power supply of the microphone at 48 V is supplied via the signal conductors. Condensers in this case distinguish between AC and DC circuits. It should be noted that the use of the remote power switch should be approached with caution, because in the case of switching the microphone input to an unbalanced source of signal, an unexpected power-up can cause a malfunction of the device (for the simple reason that voltage is applied to it).

Phantom nutrition on balanced sources of negative impact does not have. If a keyboard or an electric guitar is connected to it, it is necessary to use switchgears, whose task is to lower the supply voltage to the mark required by the connected device. It is also recommended that the source to which the phantom power is connected does not feed other devices that require more current.

If we consider this phenomenon from a technological point of view, then phantom power is a rather convenient way to save copper, but only too often in practice there are various unpleasant situations. It is necessary to use a high-quality filter separator, otherwise the supply voltage may fall into the signal circuits, and interference from the impulse power circuits may enter the receiver input or the signal may die out in the power filters.

At first glance, everything may seem quite simple and understandable, but this is by no means the case. The fact is that the filter task is not only the separation of constant and variable components. Therefore, it should also be broadband. A filter in a wide bandwidth should not distort the shape of the signals. To ensure that the acceptable length of the link does not decrease significantly, it should not lead to noticeable attenuation.

If we consider the practical application of remote power, it is worth noting that the cable P296 necessarily requires the use of two adapters. That is, at each end, the link must be on the adapter. They must have separate power inputs and information inputs. Experiments confirm that if you use adapters for the UTP5 cable, then when using all the cable cores for transferring power, the range of the central charge will almost double.
