How do I update my browser?

As a rule, most of the navigators available today are already equipped with loaded maps and a special navigation program that uses these maps and routes the route. In this case, the program works only with those cards that are created specifically for it.

However, not always the basic "stuffing" of this guidebook contains maps of all the necessary regions, and motorists are wondering how to update the navigator, that is, to install additional maps into it. And then there are two options: to purchase the necessary licensed software or just download maps from the Internet for free. Let's consider both that, and another.

How to update your browser: install official maps

The installation of official cards allows the car owner to be confident in the safety and operability of the software. This process is not difficult, because each developer puts on his official website a detailed user guide, which you can use.

How to update the navigator: install unofficial maps

The use of unofficial maps has one, but very significant complexity - the lack of any kind of technical support. Where do these cards come from? And they are exactly the same users of the device as you are, taking as a basis already existing geographic maps of different regions.

Updating the navigator using such a card will require that the format of the cards is appropriate for your navigation program and that the latter at the same time support the addition of their cards. Where to take the necessary? Today, the non-commercial resource OSM (OpenStreetMap) is very popular, where Internet users are provided with detailed, free and free maps of the whole world.

However, it is worthwhile to understand that if you decide to update the navigator using such an unofficial card, you are at risk. Before the installation process, take the time to back up all data from your device to the computer device.

Below, for example, consider a step-by-step process on how to update the navigator Navitel and Garmin with unofficial maps based on OSM.

Navigator update

1. Connect the navigator to a computer or laptop. In the event that the program is located on a separate USB flash drive, remove it from the device and open it as a removable disk.

2. In the root of the USB flash drive, create a new folder for storing third-party cards, giving it a name, for example, UserMaps. Do not touch other folders at all and do not save anything in them, so that there are no possible conflicts between third-party cards and official ones.

3. Open UserMaps and create a folder with the name of the region whose map you want to add (let's call it, for example, Region_1).

4. In Region_1, copy all the files of the new map.

5. In the navigation program, select "Open atlas" from the menu.

6. In the opened window, find the Region_1 folder with new maps, click on it and select the command "Create Atlas".

7. Wait until the indexing is finished and a new atlas is created. Press the button marked with a tick.

8. Now you can use the new map as soon as you select the corresponding atlas from the list of maps.

Updating the Garmin Navigator

Free maps for the OSM-based Garmin navigator are installed using the MapSource program as follows.

1. From the official Garmin website, download MapSource to your computer (in the Support section select Software, and then Mapping Programs).

2. In a separate folder, unzip the archive and run the MSMAIN.msi file first and then Setup.exe. Wait until the installation process is complete .

3. Download all the Garmin maps you need.

4. Unpack the archives in separate folders.

5. For each folder, run the INSTALL file so that all the card information is entered in the computer's registry.

6. Now run MapSource. In the program, you can find newly installed cards if you go to the "Service" menu, and then "Manage cartographic products".

7. The list of cards available to you will appear in the upper left corner. Switch to one of them, then it will appear in the field. Do the same with the other cards.

8. Send the selected cards to the device, where they will be formatted as a file with the IMG extension and transferred to the Garmin navigator, which should be pre-connected to the computer.
