Description

The city of Guanajuato deserves special attention, its uncommon beauty and attractions amaze even the experienced tourists. It was founded in the sixteenth century by the Spanish colonialists, who discovered there deposits rich in silver. So the history of the city began, the first villages of miners arose, and later the settlement of Santa Fe was built. Prosperity to the city was presented by the eighteenth century, it was at this time that new, rich silver veins were found. Owners of deposits and mines began active development, and money flowed into the treasury of the Spanish crown. Newly-baked Spanish nobility was not stingy at the construction of palaces, churches and temples in the city of Guanajuato. Mexico became their second homeland for them. They even called it New Spain.

The beautiful Baroque temples of La Compagnia and San Caetano de La Valencia are without a doubt one of the architectural masterpieces of colonial Mexico. Silver deposits after time lapsed, and silver mining ceased to be a priority sector of the city's economy. But tourism and education have become basic directions, and the city is the capital of the state with the same name. Guanajuato (state) has a developed economy, which is based on the extraction of gold, silver, fluorine and quartz. The petrochemical industry, the food industry and pharmaceuticals are well developed.

Name and national component

Quite interesting is the history of the name of the city of Guanajuato. Mexico was then inhabited by indigenous peoples: purépecha is one of them, and the city owes its name to it. "Quanaxhuato" in translation means the mountainous habitat of frogs. To date, the national component is composed of Khonas, Métis and whites.

Mine

The historical part of the city is located in a meandering gorge. Buildings occurred along the spurs and slopes, and on the outskirts of the mountains of Santa Rosa are the famous mine and the village of La Valencia. The mine works to this day, but despite this, it accepts sightseeing groups. For a small fee, you can drop 60 meters down and get an idea of the hard work of miners.

Narrow streets

Narrow streets often turn into stairs and rise high on the slope, so traveling by car would be difficult enough if a few tunnels and underground roads. Probably one of the most popular narrow streets is the Kisses lane. City legend says that once on this street there lived a fairly wealthy people, their daughter fell in love with a simple working local mine. Enamored, of course, forbidden to meet, but the resourceful guy took a room with a balcony in the house opposite. And thanks to a narrow alley, lovers, standing each on their balcony, could exchange kisses.

Interesting places of interest

The Basilica of Colegiata de Nuestra Señora de Guanajuato is definitely one of the most important city attractions and is located in the center of the city on the PlazadelaPaz square, which means Peace Square.

No less attractive tourist destinations are the Neu-classical Theater of Juarez, the buildings of Alhondiga de Granaditas and the Old Town Hall.

Museum of mummies

An interesting and simultaneously eerie place is the Museum of Mummies. The history of its formation goes back to the distant 1870. Then the law on payment of the tax for eternal burial was introduced. If relatives of the deceased did not have the opportunity to pay tax amounts, the buried remains were dug out and sent to public view in the building near the cemetery. Basically, the remains belong to ordinary people, workers and members of their families. Everyone could visit the vault and, for a fee, take a look at the mummy. In 1958, the law was repealed, and in 1970 a new museum was built, and all mummies are now kept under glass.

The view was held by candlelight, visitors often tore pieces from pieces, leaving them as souvenirs. In total, the museum's collection includes 111 mummies of people who died between 1850 and 1950. The eerie exposition is accompanied by inscriptions on the tablets in the form of a presentation, the story goes from the first person and tells the sad story of the mummies taken from their graves and exhibited in the museum. It is characteristic that all the bodies are mummified in a natural way. There are several versions of this phenomenon. But the most likely scientists consider the influence of climate, thanks to the hot and dry air the bodies dried up and mummified quite quickly.

Monuments to Miguel Cervantes

The inhabitants of the city have a rather interesting feature: they adore the creative work of Miguel Cervantes. Though the famous author of Don Quixote never visited Guanajuato, this did not prevent the inhabitants of the city from installing many monuments dedicated to his work, and organize the Cervantino festival in honor of his favorite writer. This event was held for the first time in 1972.

Since then, it has been held annually. The festival is one of the most significant cultural events in Mexico. Guanajuato during the time of Cervantino turns into a large theatrical stage, the artists surprise and delight their creativity residents and guests of the city, and music and singing, coming from all sides, create a feeling of universal rejoicing.

Also, Guanajuato can be proud of his university, not only in architectural terms, although the new monumental building adds credibility to the panorama of the city, but also by its students. There are a lot of them, so it seems that the inhabitants of the city are always young. Sounds of music and laughter come from all sides, innumerable bars and discos of the city are always glad to their untiring visitors.

Conclusion

A beautiful and contrasting city of Guanajuato. Mexico does not cease to amaze with its contradictions. On the one hand, almost the whole population of the country is a zealous Catholics, regularly visits churches and honors Christian saints, on the other - magnificently celebrates the Day of the Dead, dressed in eerie suits, symbolizing Death.

Guanajuato, striking beauty of architecture, colorful houses and cheerful disposition of residents, on the one hand, causes the warmest feelings, but plunges into horror the history of the appearance of the Museum of mummies.

Travelers say that Guanajuato needs to be felt, and then it will be impossible to not fall in love with it. Yes, and Mexico itself reviews from tourists receives the most flattering, indifferent there. Everyone takes away a piece of her big, boiling passion of the soul.
