Feeling of a coma in the throat. Causes and remedies.

Many of us are familiar with an extremely unpleasant sensation when it seems that a lump in the throat is stuck. What is the cause of discomfort? This feeling is caused, as a rule, by a violation of muscle activity or increased sensitivity of the esophagus. Recent stress, a sudden burst of emotions, frequent swallowing, dryness in the throat, or rapid breathing can also cause a coma in the throat. Painful sensations lead, as a rule, to a sharp decrease in appetite. However, eating (also drinking, crying) can greatly alleviate the pain.

What leads to such an unpleasant feeling?

Experts say that the feeling of compression in the throat is a consequence of the spread of an infectious agent located on the nasopharyngeal mucosa. Since the nasopharynx is a reflexogenic zone (ie, it transmits sensory impulses to the brain), the layer under the mucous membrane is littered with nerve endings. The throat, moreover, is a place of accumulation of lymphoid tissue, in which inflammatory processes easily arise and develop. In this case, the nasopharynx suffers, chronic tonsillitis occurs, the main complaints in which are perspiration and sore throat, redness, dryness and a sensation of a coma in the throat. Viruses and harmful microorganisms, falling into the deepest layers of the mucous membrane, act as irritants of nerve endings. As a result, there is an unpleasant sensation of compression in the throat.

Is it possible to fix the problem?

Of course available. However, it is worth remembering that self-medication can be extremely dangerous. A simple regular rinse of the mouth with swelling, redness and dryness will bring noticeable relief, but will not eliminate the cause of the disease, but will only reduce the intensity of its manifestation. This is the source of a prolonged sensation of a coma in the throat. A person can experience this feeling even for many years, letting everything go on its own, and, thereby, allowing the infection to move farther and farther.

If you are concerned about a lump in the throat, treatment should be carried out in strict accordance with the recommendations of specialists. The first step towards eliminating this problem should be the search for the causative agent of the disease and the establishment of its variety. To do this, the doctor conducts a general examination of the patient and appoints a complete blood test. It is also necessary to make manometry (the purpose of this study is to measure pressure in the esophagus) and chest X-ray. If everything is in order from the point of view of physiology, the organs and systems work without disturbances, but the patient, constantly experiencing a feeling of a coma in the throat, is subject to social or psychological stresses, the diagnosis is "hysterical com."

Various physiotherapy procedures are considered effective in combating the disease. The otorhinolaryngologist can prescribe the procedure for irrigation of the mucous throat with mineral substances, as a result of which the causative agents of the disease die - fungi, microbes, viruses.

Next, we should conduct a course of rehabilitation therapy, which helps to restore the normal functioning of the mucous membrane of the throat as soon as possible, and also to increase the immunity that provides protection from relapse of the disease.

There are cases when a person was only helped by a specialist's assurance that no serious illness was detected. The patient simply calmed down, because the sensation of a coma in the throat is easy to take for a swelling. In this case, it can be assumed that the disease is caused by An increased level of anxiety, depression, stress, psychological or social problems. A psychologist or psychiatrist can help in resolving the problem.
