Dyukovsky park. Sightseeing in Odessa

Parks of Odessa are considered to be the landmark places of this city. There are more than ten of them. The most famous is the Alexander Park leading to the sea. A well-groomed arboretum in winter turns into a skating rink.

But in this article we will tell about the historical garden of the city. Dyukovsky Park, which many know as the Richelieu Garden, City Garden, is the oldest in Odessa. He is very fond of the people of Odessa, often there are different events, especially for children. Of course, it is not included in the top ten attractions of the "pearl of the sea", but this interesting monument must be visited. After all, he has such an entertaining story. Many parks in Odessa are closer to the city center, but it is better to get to this garden from the central bus station.

How it all began

They say that Duke de Richelieu, the mayor of Odessa, decided to build a country residence. Yes, not just so, but surrounded by a garden, in the French style. In addition, dust storms often raged on the outskirts of the city , and the mayor wanted to set an example of how to deal with them. Therefore, at the beginning of the nineteenth century, namely in 1810, this park began to be broken.

In the early years of the garden he was called the Richelieu dacha. And the place for the park was chosen special. On its territory was the source, from which, as the legend says, the water of the de Ribas detachment was drunk, hastening to storm Hadzhibey in the eighteenth century. Now Dyukovsky Park is located on the territory of the city. It stretches along the Balkovskaya street, located on the sloboda side of Odessa.

History of the park

When Duke de Richelieu left for France, he left the garden to his adjutant, Colonel Stempkovsky. He gave it to the city. But the fact is that gradually the location of the garden played a bad joke with him. The regions between which he was located - Moldavanka and Slobodka - were very unsuccessful. A hundred years later, in 1910, the Dyukovsky Garden was a sad sight. No one courted him, the municipal authorities did not take interest in them, and gradually the park turned into a littered wasteland.

But after the Great Patriotic War this area began to be reconstructed. Restored garden decided to call the Victory Park and, accordingly, decorate. In addition, there were held Odessa VDNH, for which special pavilions were built. Served a beautifully restored park and a set for Soviet cinema, because it was here that Khutsiev and Mironer shot the film "Spring on Zarechnaya Street."

Summer entertainment center or refuge of bandits?

However, VDNH in Odessa did not cause much enthusiasm among the townspeople. Therefore, since the sixties of the last century Dyukovsky Park has become a kind of sports and entertainment center. Here open a swimming pool with towers, a planetarium, summer theaters, and in pavilions for exhibitions in the summer pioneers. Here even the museum of the whaling flotilla, known for the fact that its jawbone stood this huge marine mammal, was opened. Next to it you could see a real harpoon cannon. But gradually Dyukovsky Park is again declining. In the nineties of the last century, he even turned into a favorite place of gang warfare. Representatives of the criminal world gathered in the billiard club "Carambole". The glory of the park was such that before the beginning of the two thousandth years people were afraid to come here. Later the garden was again renamed Dyukovsky. Victory Park was named by the one who used to bear the name of Lenin.

How the garden looks now

The present Dyukovsky Park has retained its original structure. It was built on three levels. In the lower part of the garden you can get from Balkovskaya street. The middle level is on the fortified slope of a not too steep ravine. Nevertheless, there are artificial terraces. From the main entrance you can walk along the stairs with observation platforms. It is the main avenue from which the side paths diverge. This road can be reached to the main square with the central pavilion. On the territory of the park is still the building of the duke's house, because the condition of donating the garden to the city was precisely the preservation of the residence of de Richelieu in inviolability. True, because of the reorganization of the Soviet era, it has changed a lot, but still crowns it crown - the symbol of this ducal family.

What can I do here?

In the daytime in the garden, mostly young mothers with children walk. For them, there is a special house where you can repack the child for free and wait for the rain, if it suddenly comes on. Over the ponds in summer you can ride on a suspension road. In summer the local people are sunbathing on the lawns of the park, and in the autumn they also go to enjoy the peace and tranquility. And in the middle of the largest artificial pond is a children's fortress. By the way, the famous source, about which we wrote above, beats in this pond. Therefore it bears the name of Deribas. From the terraces of the park it's nice to watch the sunset - it's no wonder that local shops are busy with loving couples in the evenings. The equestrian club "Mustang" works in the garden, and for a fee you can ride on its paths. From time to time dog shows are held here, and agility is arranged for four-legged friends. Odessa Tourist Center conducts author's two-hour tours of the park, telling about the life of the "gloomy duke" and the history of his residence. The cost of such a walk with a guide is about seventy hryvnia.

The future of the garden

The park is a beautiful green area, but, unfortunately, it is not too well maintained. Perhaps, this corner of the seaside city, so many years offended by the attention of the authorities, will soon be awarded a better fate. In Odessa, the project of further reconstruction of the park and the construction of a nine-story hotel complex has already been approved. According to these plans, the garden will be completely transformed and divided into several entertainment zones for different age groups. Perhaps, then the former glory will return to him, and the Dyukovsky Park (Odessa) will again be the place that the Duke de Richelieu liked so much. No wonder the latter called his residence "the blossoming corner of Versailles."
