Day of the veterinarian in Russia

Even in ancient times, revered Flora and Lavra - solemn celebrations in honor of the saints were held throughout Russia. Novgorod tradition says that the death of livestock has ceased since the discovery of the power of the saints. So there was a Veterinarian's Day. From that time, Russian people began to worship the brothers, who were considered patrons of horses.

Flor and Laurus lived in Byzantium in the second century. They were stonemasons, they believed in Christ, and Archangel Michael taught them to handle horses. When the brothers were engaged in the construction of a pagan temple, the priests' son approached them, who suddenly got a splinter of a stone in his eye. The workers wanted to punish, but the young men promised the son of the priest a cure.

The brothers turned him into Christianity, and he immediately recovered. The boy's father also turned to Christ. The temple was completed, but the idols were overthrown and the holy cross was placed. The pagans did not tolerate this and threw the brothers into an empty well, which was covered with earth. The relics of the saints were discovered and transported to Constantinople several centuries later.

Veterinarian's day is associated with another legend. According to her, the brothers professionally dug wells. Once the earth collapsed, and the young men remained under the rubble. From under the collapse of the stream, to which came to drink a skinny mare. She quickly recovered. Then the inhabitants began to drive horses to this watering hole, and later excavated the well and saw there living brothers.

That's why the veterinarian's day was popularly called a "horse festival". On a solemn date, the horses rested, they were bathed, decorated, fed with satiety and sprinkled with holy water. Mistresses washed the huts, prepared a festive table and dressed up. There was also a tradition to brew beer on that day. On the icons Flor and Laurus are depicted as patrons of horses.
