Bobruisk: sightseeing of the city

Bobruisk is one of the seven largest and oldest cities in Belarus, which has preserved beautiful architectural monuments on its streets, welcomes its guests and invites you to an exciting excursion through its streets.

A bit of the history of the city

The first mention of the city, which was at the confluence of the rivers Bobruik and Berezina, are found in the chronicles in 1387. By the beginning of the 16th century a powerful fortification system had already been erected there. Bobruisk by that time had already become one of the major centers of the Lithuanian principality. At the end of the 18th century the city passed under the jurisdiction of the Russian Empire and became one of the major suppliers of the forest (this event affected the coat of arms). In 1810, the construction of a new fortress began in Bobruisk, which in 2 years played a major role in protecting the city from Napoleonic troops. Since the beginning of the 20th century, it occupies an important place in the revolutionary movement in the country, and during the Second World War the fortifications of the city for some time detained the invaders.

At the moment, Bobruisk is one of the regional centers of the Mogilev region, famous for its cultural monuments and a large number of historical sites, as well as the well-known balneo-mud resort of Belarus.

Bobruisk fortress

So, you came to Bobruisk. It is better to start seeing the city's sights from the city fortress. Founded more than 200 years ago, it is well preserved until our times. Now this object is included in the list of historical and cultural values of the country. The bastion of the citadel includes more than 50 objects: the ruins of forts, located between the railway and automobile bridges, the barracks, the tower of Opperman, the lunette, the remains of earthworks and about twenty buildings of the administrative-household zone.

Monument to the Beaver

Bobruisk, whose attractions are discussed in this article, are sometimes jokingly referred to as "beaver city". In honor of this there is a monument to this animal. In the center of the city stands an impressive builder of dams, dressed in merchant's clothes and lifting his hat in a welcoming gesture. There is a sign that the rubbing of a chain of pocket watches on a beaver can attract happiness.

The streets of Bobruisk

In addition to the monument to Bobru and the serf complex, many interesting historical buildings were preserved in their streets by Bobruisk. Attractions of greatest interest to tourists are in the central part of the city, in its historical center. For a long time it was forbidden to build houses with a height of more than two floors, thanks to this, Bobruisk retained the romantic appearance of the late 19th century.

Church of the Virgin Mary

One of the most significant architectural monuments of the city is the Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary, built in the very beginning of the 20th century in the Gothic style. In the Soviet era, the temple was first closed and used for economic purposes, and in the 58th year in general they destroyed a significant part of the facade and attached it to the administrative building. Until now, a significant part of the church has been preserved, in which, after carrying out restoration work, services are held.

St. Nicholas Cathedral

Another architectural monument of the city is St. Nicholas Cathedral. It is the oldest church, the first building of which was built in the early 19th century on the banks of the Berezan River. In the late 19th century, thanks to the donations of parishioners and money allocated from the state treasury, the church was moved to the city center. Now, after the restoration works, the cathedral again shone with all the facets of its pristine beauty.

This church has always been and remains the main center of the spiritual life of the city, whose inhabitants consider Saint Nicholas the patron saint of Bobruisk. It is noteworthy that the services in the church did not stop even in Soviet atheistic times.

Festivals in the city

Fans of event tourism are also interested in visiting the city of Bobruisk. On the City Day , the folk festival "Friendship Wreath" is held here every year, where various contests are held, musicians from different countries, dance groups perform.

In addition, guests of the city will certainly be interested in visiting the open-air on ceramics.

Evening life of the city

Evening Bobruisk invites to visit a drama theater built of glass and white marble. Its interior deserves special attention: chandeliers and lamps made of colored crystal, stairs made of white marble, original parquet is made of ash and oak, the walls are lined with pink travertine and gray tufa, decorated with elegant panels. Many productions gather complete auditoriums.

His hospitable embrace opens the beautiful Belarusian Bobruisk, the sights of which are diverse and interesting. A trip to this city will remain in the memory of his guests for a long time, who will necessarily want to return here.
