Amalfi Coast: photos, tours and reviews. Sightseeing Italy

Costa Amalfiana, or the Amalfi Coast, stretching along the southern part of the Sorrento Peninsula for 50 kilometers, is one of the best Mediterranean coasts of all Europe. And this is easily explained.

Cliffed in the sea shiny abyss cliffs with small terraces, unsettled rows of snow-white villas, as well as the sea and sky, merging into one whole - this is the picture before those who sees in Sorrento (Italy). Photos of beautiful landscapes are presented in this article. The natural diversity and amazing beauty of the area attracts a huge number of tourists from all over the world.

Vietri sul Mare

For many centuries, local residents are engaged in the manufacture of tiles for cladding and ceramic products. Although, of course, mostly Amalfi coast vacationers are attracted by this. Many are also interested in the history and architecture of Vietri sul Mare.

In the palace of Karosino, located on the avenue of Umberto I, not so long ago appeared the Museum of Fine Arts. Manuel Kargaleiro is a master of ceramics and an artist from Portugal, who made a lot of efforts to create this exhibition complex. Here are the works of the author himself, executed in Vietri sul Mare, and works by other foreign and Italian masters. In Vietri, ceramic production is a large industrial sector, symbol of which is the palace of ceramics Solimene. This factory is a tourist attraction, which is lined with narrow tubes made of clay by Paolo Solieri.

The Abbey of Santa Trinita

The building of this church was built in the XI century, after which it was expanded and rebuilt in the XIII and XIV centuries. This church is one of the most famous in Sorrento, Italy (photo in the article below), it is located between the Santa Trinita bridge and Tornabuoni street. The author of the project to rebuild the ancient Benedictine monastery, which used to stand here, allegedly became Andrea Pisano. It is worth noting that the interior of the church is as harsh as its facade.

In this house today are exhibited various archaeological finds, marble sculptures, Roman sarcophagi, paintings by Giovanni Francesco Penny, Andrea da Salerno and others. Of special interest is a map of the XV century, silverware, an elephant ivory case. In the library there were miniatures and incunabula IX-XVI centuries, in the archive - valuable copies of the times of the Normans and Lombards.

Cava de Tirreni

The city in 1058 was transferred to the ownership of the abbey of Santa Trinita. He played for centuries the main role in trade relations with the kingdom of Naples at the expense of numerous tax breaks and monopoly on the sale of silk tapestries.

Today, the Amalfi coast of many tourists also attracts this city, which has retained its original plan. A distinctive feature of Cava de Tirreni are the streets with small porticos. In other southern cities such architecture is not found anywhere else. A typical example are the galleries of Scachventi.

Chetara

From here you can enjoy a stunning view of Salerno, as well as the opportunity to see the picturesque town of sailors and fishermen, which is considered a port, Santa Trinita. Before proceeding further along the route, it is worthwhile to buy dried fish, which is sold here in ceramic vases.

Maiori

The length of the beaches and the number of interesting buildings Majori can be called one of the most popular resorts of the entire Amalfi coast (Italy). Photo of the city is presented in this article. It is located in a bay and is a modern village with a developed infrastructure. The city was rebuilt after the flood, which happened in 1954.

Santa Maria a Mare is a church located on a hill. It is decorated with a dome of majolica, in addition, there is a bell tower of the XVIII century. In the XII century, the first building was made, over the course of centuries the external appearance underwent various changes. The space of the church is divided into 3 naves. Especially interesting is the coffered ceiling of the 16th century. In this place you can admire the image of the Madonna with the baby and the main altar. In the museum of church art organized in the crypt there are works of the XII-XVIII centuries, separate interest is caused by the alabaster stucco of the 15th century.

Santa Maria de Olearià

Arriving on the Amalfi coast, special attention should be paid to this abbey. The town of Erki appeared around the Benedictine monastery. From the observation deck, it offers an amazing view of Campanella Cape, and you can also admire Capri. On the way from Erki you can see the remains of the Benedictine complex. They are right in the rock. There are also 3 temples here. The oldest is decorated with frescoes. There is a debate about the date of its creation (X-XI century). The main chapel was built in the second half of the 12th century. The chapel of San Nicola was erected at the beginning of the same century, on its walls and vaults there are unique decorative frescoes.

Minori

Medieval polycentrism, which is characteristic of the Amalfi coast (Italy), allowed the city of Minori to retain the relics of Saint Trophimen. Probably, it is due to ancient religious traditions that the main ceremonies of Holy Week are preserved , when processions with laudatory chants pass.

This city is much smaller than neighboring Majori. Here is the basilica of Santa Trofimena, which was erected in the XI-XII centuries and rebuilt after seven hundred years. Here is a crypt converted from the XVIII century from the patroness of the city. In the west there is a Roman villa of the 1st c. BC. It probably belonged to one of the court emperors. In the center is a swimming pool. Triclinium divides the dwelling into 2 parts, in one of them there are terms.

Ravello

The town is located away from the coastal fuss, as you can see by looking at the Amalfi coast on the map of Italy. It is distinguished by an amazing calm, spreading over the magnificent gardens, streets and buildings of Sicily. In the XIII century, the city occupied the main positions in trade with Sicily and the East, while its population exceeded today's fifteen times.

Cathedral in Ravello

On the central square. Vescovado by order of Orso Papirio in 1086-1087 the cathedral was erected. He had to visually resemble the abbey of Monte Cassino. After some time (in the XVIII century) it was rebuilt in the Baroque style. In 1786, the portico was dismantled, from which only 4 columns remained today, located earlier in front of the facade. Architraves of marble are original. They are borrowed from various ancient buildings. A bronze door was donated by a merchant from Ravello. It is worth noting that this is the work of the famous Barizano da Trani. On one of the doors, you can see the year of its creation - 1179th.

Surely you have no doubt that the Amalfi Coast on the map of Italy occupies an important place. We continue to consider the beauty of Ravello further. Near the church there is a bell tower of the 13th century with intertwined arches and bifors. Its interior space is divided by pilasters and columns into 3 naves. During the Renaissance, the stucco of the transept was redone, and the vaults were abolished. Along the nave to the left is the pulpit (1330) - this is the only example of Byzantine architecture left in Italy.

Audience of Oscar Niemeyr

It is located in a very favorable place. The audience was created in 2010 by a project of a little-known Brazilian architect. Concerts of the annual music festival are held here.

Atrani

Arriving on the Amalfi coast (the map is presented in this article), it is worth to visit Atrani. Here the road goes a little upwards, sometimes even leads along the terraces of houses. The overpass was created especially because of small areas. This is a real barrier between the sea and the city. The city is on rocky steep slopes, it is intersected by numerous staircases, paths, viaducts that stretch over white houses, variegated gardens and gardens.

In 977, an Arab traveler described this settlement as the most prosperous, noble, abundant and rich city in the region. Today, all that could be preserved from the greatness of those years is a symbol of Italy, the glory of which spread to the whole world.

No wonder the Amalfi Coast (Italy) is so popular among tourists. Many people admire this place. Amalfi reliably protects the tower - it is a defensive system that was erected in the sixteenth century along the southern coast. Opposite is the hotel "Luna", which occupies the territory of the monastery of San Francesco.

At the beginning of the western part of this coast is an arsenal. From it two naves were preserved, covered with arched cross vaults. On a rocky cliff there is a historic Capuchin hotel, which was organized in the 13th century monastery of San Pietro della Canonica.

The patio of Paradiso

Paradiso is a patio that played the role of a cemetery in 1266-1268. For famous residents of the city. For this, the main part of the left side of the Crucifixion church was dismantled. The courtyard is surrounded by a peristyle of graceful lancet arches supporting double columns. It is worthwhile to carefully consider the sculptures of different times. Judging by the reviews, such masterpieces of art leave an indelible impression.

Emerald Grotto

The sights of the region are very interesting for many who came to the Amalfi Coast. The so-called emerald grotto deserves special attention. A special shade in which the rays are painted, refracted under the rocks in the water, led to the appearance of a greenish color of the reservoir. The presence of stalagmites on the bottom of the grotto suggests that previously it was dry. Due to seismic activity, water began to flow here, flooding it completely.

Chapel of the Crucifix

By age, this structure corresponds to the cathedral located in Salerno: the altar is considered the work of the famous Domenico Fontana, the frescoes are Vincenzo de Pino, the statue of Saint Andrew is by Michelangelo Naccherino, besides the figures of Saint Lorenzo and Stefan made Pietro Bernini.

Positano

In the sixties of last century it was the most popular and fashionable place of the coast. It is worth noting that since the years of its charm it has not lost. This slightly haughty city entangles a network of narrow streets with benches, cafes and restaurants, a studio of artists. Mediterranean white houses are buried in dense greenery. Their shape resembles a cube, and arches with arches and loggias overlooking the sea.

Along the entire coast stretch very popular beaches: La Porta, Fornillo, Arienzo and Chumicello, in the grottoes of rocks you can find the remains of the ancient first settlements. For example, in the grotto under the name La Porta were found objects of the Mesolithic and Paleolithic period.
