Alberobello, Italy: attractions of the white city

The homeland of majestic monuments of architecture is of great interest to tourists. Italy admires ancient sights, however in the country there is one corner, the structures of which do not fit into the traditional architectural canons.

In the south of the Apennine peninsula there is no place more popular than a small town famous for its amazing houses. The popular place of Apulia with a population of no more than 11 thousand people is admired by all tourists fascinated by a quiet corner with an uncomplicated life.

Business card of the city

The Italian town of Alberobello (Italy), located in the province of Bari, is a real discovery for Europeans who have never seen anything like it. The original structures, which form entire streets, give the settlement unique.

Similar to the fabulous houses of the dwelling, which are called trulli , are located in two districts of the city. Reminiscent caps of gnomes, white stone buildings with a conical roof were erected without any solutions, which was not done at all by accident.

The history of the appearance of unusual houses

The fact is that according to the laws of the Neapolitan kingdom all city settlements on the lands of Apulia were taxed. To save money, the columns of the Akwaviv dynasty forbade their employees to erect any structures with the help of cement. However, local peasants who did not want to remain without a roof over their heads found a way to get around all obstacles.

They came up with the idea of building stone-built houses of round shape with a roof in the form of a dome. Such dwellings resembled a children's designer: unusual buildings were laid out of stones, without a binder solution, as if from cubes.

Rapid destruction and new construction

Naturally, such houses easily collapsed, and no collector of taxes could blame residents for violating the existing law. It was enough to take out one stone that played the role of a kind of castle, from the base of the roof, and the buildings turned into a pile of stones.

A new house, in which no special property was stored, the peasants erected in two days.

Only at the end of the 18th century, by order of the ruler of Naples, Alberobello (Italy), was given freedom, and the need to demolish their homes in a few minutes and rebuild them no longer.

Troll Features

One-story trulli were adorned with cute poppies, the form of which testified not only to the level of skill of the builder, but also to which estate and sex the owner of the dwelling belonged to. On some roofs you can see mystical symbols with a secret meaning.

The classic trulli, which are the pride of the fabulously beautiful Alberobello (Italy), are lined with limestone boulders from the very base to the domes on the dome.

Often, as a load-bearing wall, a monolithic rock protruded from which a layer of soil was previously removed. In the houses there are windows and stoves, which are located in the thickness of the wall. Roofs, consisting of two layers, are hermetically protected from moisture penetration inside the dwelling.

Most of today's houses, consisting of one room, admire the color of tourists who came on an excursion to Alberobello (Italy). The sights of the city (and there are about 1400 of them) are privately owned, and they can be bought or sold. According to the latest data, for the picturesque dwellings the local population asks for up to 30 thousand euros, and Europeans buy them as a country house.

Hospitable city

In such unusual buildings, whose walls are covered with ivy or vines, there are local restaurants, workshops, shops and even temples. All tourists note the special friendliness of the inhabitants of Alberobello (Italy), and many of them even invite visitors to the city to go in and climb to the roof to admire the delightful spectacle opening from the heights.

In many houses there are souvenir shops, and hospitable hosts will show their home with great pleasure and will tell many stories.

Tourists adore photographing the magical city, which is famous for the whole world of Italy.

Alberobello: souvenirs

The mass of souvenir shops offers thousands of handmade gifts for every taste and purse. Here you can buy quality products from linen, leather, wood, paintings written by local artists and even jewelry.

Of course, the main symbol of the city are trulli, therefore all popular souvenirs have such a shape and image. Elegant figurines, small magnets, cute piggy banks, colorful mugs and more offer a selection of small shopkeepers.

Tourists celebrate wonderful food shops offering branded ice cream, traditional sweets from almond dough, delicious cheeses, olive oil, liqueurs from rose petals, traditional pasta.

Wine cellars

It is impossible not to mention the bars that are in the Troll. In the cellars, where the right temperature is artificially maintained, you can taste fragrant wines that do not require the addition of sugar.

The cost of a sparkling drink, which is bottled in the form of an unusual house, is about 20 euros. However, all the guests of the city say that it is worth it, and many tourists take a large stock of a delightful product by car. Any purchase made in the city will be a perfect reminder of the charming Italian corner.

Historical heritage

Since 1996, narrow streets have been protected by UNESCO, which has recognized the trulli as part of the historical heritage. Reminiscent of the board with chess pieces, the city of Alberobello (Italy) keeps the houses erected in the 18th century, but some of them appeared only a hundred years ago.

It is noteworthy that in 1925 the construction of the trolls was forbidden officially, and therefore in no other city of the world such buildings will no longer surprise travelers.

Friendly Alberobello (Italy), a photo of which transmits the fairy-tale spirit that reigns in the city, awaits tourists to open all their secrets to them. A special atmosphere, reigning in a calm corner, will make forget all the adversity and problems. Guests of the city admit that the fascinating journey to the fairy tale leaves an indelible impression.
