In 1865, a young scientist defended his doctoral dissertation. It already laid the foundations of a new look at organic solutions. Now he becomes a professor at St. Petersburg University. In 1880 Mendeleyev was nominated for academics, however, the candidacy of the scientist did not pass, which provoked violent public indignation. The next ten years the scientist continues to work in the research and teaching fields within the walls of his native university, but in 1890 leaves him, protesting against the oppression of the rights and freedoms of students.

At the end of his life, a recognized scientist still worked as a consultant for the Naval Ministry. Later he even became the organizer and the first director of the State Chamber of Weights and Measures. It was in this position that he worked and even died. Dmitry Ivanovich died on February 2, 1907 in the capital.
