What is the size of a self-tapping roofing

Installation of the roof of a private house or building is a responsible measure, the quality of which often depends on the durability and strength of the structure as a whole. The roof, which has been laid with technological disruptions, starts to deteriorate even in the first season. And the reason for this can be not only the roofing material itself, but also the fixing elements used, which are responsible for the reliability of the fastening of the coating. Today, the most affordable, reliable and popular are roofing screws, the price and size of which vary considerably.

Self-tapping roofing

This is an advanced model of metal screws with its own specific application. They differ with a sharp tip intended for drilling holes for fastening directly during the installation of the roof, without pre-drilling with any tool on all fasteners.

For each type of building materials and the type of rafter system, you need your own roofing screws: with or without a polymer coating, screws with different threads, type of head and a tip.

In some cases, for joining metal and wood panels, a roofing screw with a drill is used, which allows for drilling to prevent the destruction of metal.

For certain installation works, the roofing screws have been specially designed, which include a metal washer with a rubber gasket. Such fasteners with sealing washers tighten the roofing material more tightly to the structure, provide a tight connection and prevent the penetration of moisture into the parts of the parts joining, preventing corrosion on them.

How to choose high-quality roofing screws

Today, the market of building materials offers a huge number of fasteners. But not all products are of good quality and are able to last long and reliably. When choosing self-tapping screws, do not buy the first products found. First of all, when choosing, it is necessary to determine for what specific purposes they are purchased, what specific features have the structures fastened by them (made of wood, metal or combined), to find out what the roofing self-cutter should be. Then you need to evaluate the quality of the products. Firm fastenings on a hat have marks (stigma). In addition, a quality product should have a rubber gasket that fits snugly against the metal washer. It should be borne in mind that in cheap screws they are made of low quality rubber, which in time will begin to lose properties and will crack under the influence of temperature changes, which can lead in places of fastenings to leaks.

To choose a quality self-cutter, you just need to squeeze the washer with pliers - the paint should not be scratched. The rubber washer should fit fairly close to the metal.

Specifications

Typically, a self-tapping roofing is made of carbon steel and galvanized. Thanks to anti-corrosion coating, these products last long enough - up to 50 years. Also, the market represents stainless steel hardware that is used in particularly critical areas requiring increased strength. They are much more expensive.

Roofing screws for metal tiles differ in the shape of the cap, which can be:

  • Standard type, that is, fitted with a screwdriver.
  • With faces. To work with such hardware, special bits are used.

Depending on the roofing material, the self-tapping screws can, so to speak, sink in the coating or press it.

Among the huge variety of options, you can always choose suitable fasteners, the length of which exactly corresponds to the wavelength of the roofing sheets.

What dimensions can the roofing scales have?

The size of the screws for roof installation is chosen depending on the characteristics of the materials to be bonded.

  • For the fastening of metal roofs the most optimal are the self-tapping roofing 4.8 mm. The length may vary depending on the installation site. For example, for fastening sheets with wooden structures on the supporting frame, depending on the crate, the length for a good and reliable fastening should be 28-35 mm. Roof sheets can be connected with fasteners 20 mm in length, and for fixing additional elements you need products, the length of which is 50-70 mm.
  • To fix the corrugated board, due to its dimensions, self-cutters with a large diameter, for example, up to 6.3 mm and with a fairly wide range of length (20-250 mm) may be needed.
  • Self-tapping roofing 5.5 mm is used to fix the corrugated board and metal to the metal substructure, the thickness of which is up to 5.0 mm.

Weight, price and expense

A thousand standard screws (size 4.8 × 28 mm) weighs 5.23 kg. The price range of production is quite wide. The cost often depends on the manufacturer, the quality of products and their dimensions. Today the most rational and popular are considered roofing screws, the price of which is 2 rubles.

Many are interested in how many pieces of hardware will be needed to securely fasten 1 sheet of roofing material. A standard answer to this question does not exist, since for different materials their number may differ significantly. For example, the consumption of self-tapping roofing per 1 m 2 Profiled sheeting - from 5 to 8 pieces. Screws for metal tiles have more consumption - it will take about 8-10 pieces.

Kinds

There are 2 types of fasteners:

  • Roofing screws for wood. They have a rare thread, they are very hard to screw into a metal.
  • For metal . They are distinguished by frequent carving, they are larger in diameter and do not stick well in the tree, therefore they are not used for wooden structures.

Self-drilling screws for wood

Roofing screws for wood will be needed if you need to attach metal roofing to a wooden crate on the roof. The product for sealing the drilled hole is equipped with a special washer and is equipped with a rubber gasket, which performs a waterproofing function. For convenience, the tip of such fasteners is equipped with a drill. The main difference of wood screws from metal products is in the form of a tip (drill) and thread pitch.

The main dimensions of the self-tapping roofing wood are as follows:

  • 4.8x28 mm;
  • 4.8x35 mm.

Such fasteners can be used both for mounting metal tiles to a wooden crate, and for sewing sheets between themselves (or use specially designed dimensions: a self-tapping roofing of 4.8x20 mm).

If it is necessary to fix the ridge bar or snow holder, it is necessary to use products of a longer length - 4.8x70 mm or 4.8x60 mm.

Self-tapping screws for metal

Used if the lath of the roof is made of a metal profile.

The main dimensions of the metal roofing screed are as follows:

  • For drilling a metal with a thickness of not more than 3 mm, the product is 4.8x19 mm;
  • For a metal up to 6 mm thick, a size of 5.5x25 mm is required;
  • Self-tapping roofing 5.5x35 and 5.5x50 mm is able to drill metal, the thickness of which is up to 12 mm.

Painted roofing screws

They are designed to connect metallic painted roof elements to the roof frame of wood or metal. This type of fasteners differs only in the presence of a color similar to that of the metal profile fixed by it.

Self-tapping screws for mounting corrugated board

When using them, there is no need to pre-drill a hole with a drill. These fasteners can easily be mounted to a load-bearing structure up to 12.5 mm thick. However, directly the corrugated board should not exceed a thickness of 1.5 mm. The maximum seal at the place of contact with the metal is provided by the rubber gasket. And the use of self-tapping screws with a coated polymer coating will create a more aesthetic appearance, since the fasteners will merge with the general form of the roofing.

Self-tapping screws

Such fasteners are characterized by a drill-like end. They are designed for drilling through holes in the metal profiled sheeting during installation, without using a separate drill. Such a fastening is equipped with a metal washer with a rubber gasket, which maximizes the sealing of the joint.

Despite the fact that the screws are small fasteners, they perform a very important function: they are responsible for the reliability and durability of fixing the entire roof. It is on their quality that the durability of the roofing will largely depend on all the vagaries of the weather. Otherwise, it can simply "fly away" at the first storm.
