Voronezh Airport: photo, historical background

The civil airfield complex in Voronezh was built in 1933. Already from the summer of 1933 it served as a transfer point for aircraft that followed from Moscow to Stalingrad. Before the war, the status of the runway did not allow to qualitatively serve civil aircraft. Only by 1946 there were built an airport terminal, as well as service buildings.

Voronezh (airport) begins to develop actively in the 60s. In 1964 the Voronezh air squadron was formed, and new Soviet-made aircraft were also received. In 1971, a new airfield complex near the village of Chertovitskoye begins to operate.

By 1980, the Voronezh fleet was replenished with medium-haul aircraft "Tu-134", "Yak-45" and "M-15". The runway was reconstructed. The throughput capacity was 400 people per hour.

In the post-Soviet period, namely, since 1993, passenger traffic has decreased almost fourfold, and the Voronezhavia company was established on the basis of the former airport. After 2 years the air hub was given the international status.

In the 2000s flights from Chertovitsky are carried out only by the airline "Polet", falls to the critical value of passenger traffic, infrastructure is deteriorating. Since 2011, large-scale reconstruction works are beginning. In 2013, the first airliner of the Boeing-737 type, belonging to the Russian air carrier UTair, was adopted. The amount of passenger traffic for 2014 was more than 400 thousand people.
