In December 2014, the film "Unshaken" was released on big screens. The review of this picture from the main character of this whole drama - Louis Zamperini - remained unknown to the public: Louis died six months before the premiere. Nevertheless, the heated debate over the picture among critics and viewers. What is the story of the film "Unbroken" and who took it off?

The creators of the picture

The biography of Louis Zamperini, an athlete who experienced the scourge of World War II, was widely discussed in the United States back in the 1950s. In a wave of universal interest, Universal Studios acquired the rights to film this story exactly by the end of the 50's. Then it was planned to entrust the role of Louis to the famous Hollywood actor Tony Curtis ("Only girls are in jazz"), but the matter stalled.

In 2010, Laura Hillenbrand's book, devoted to the biography of Zamperini, saw the light. When this publication became a bestseller, the "bosses" of the Universal film company again intensified and instructed to write a screenplay for the film "Unshaken" to the Coen brothers ("Spy Bridge").

In the director's chair was to sit Francis Lawrence ("Constantine: Lord of Darkness"), but he refused. So Angelina Jolie became the director of the film "Unbroken".

The review, which arrived on the picture right after her premiere from the periodical Variety publishing house, says that Jolie showed "impeccable mastery" and "sober restraint" in her work. Other critics complain that she turned a brilliant story into a good, ordinary narrative. What is this "narrative" about?

"Unbroken": review, short story

The picture "Unshaken" is a biographical one and displays the events of a certain segment of the life of American athlete Louis Zamperini.

The story begins with the fact that Louis arrives in Berlin to take part in the Olympic Games. It was 1935, Nazism was already raging in Germany.

Louis failed to earn a single title in games, but he was noticed by Hitler himself, who even expressed a desire to talk with the athlete in his box. After this, Zamperini departed back to the States and began preparations for the next Olympic Games, but the Second World War broke out.

Soon Louis was sent to the front. He flew on military aircraft. Once the crew of Zamperini crashed in the waters of the Pacific Ocean. 47 days the pilots dangled in the sea until they were nailed to the Japanese islands. So Zamperini was captured by the Japanese.

In captivity, life was far from a fairy tale: beatings, heavy work and bullying. But the athlete returned home after all, when the Allied forces won.

The plot, as you can see, is very exciting. But the critic from The Hollywood Reporter notes that Jolie has too tightened the segment where Zamperini is in captivity: for a long time nothing happens on the screen, except for bullying, which makes the viewer yawn, despite all the horrors displayed on the screen.

Initially, Louis played the role of Dana de Haan. This is a young American actor, who has not yet noted the main roles. But Angelina defended the candidacy of Briton Jack O'Connell. He started, like many other actors, with serial projects: in 2005 he appeared in a soap opera called "Doctors", and later achieved that he was shot in four episodes of the detective "Purely English Murder."

In 2007, Jack, too, did not differ much: he was offered only episodic roles in the cinema. But soon the actor, finally, got into a big movie: he lit up in the horror "Paradise Lake" and the action film "Harry Brown".

The role of a bad guy went to Jack in the youth series "Milk Pipers". And in 2014 for O'Connell, the "star" hour, because of the role of Zamperian could dream of any actor. For his work in the film "Unshaken," Jack won the BAFTA award.

Other performers of roles

What else is said about the cast of the project "Unshaken"? The review of the movie from the publisher Forbes describes the situation as best as possible. A certain Scott Mendelson in his recall notes that with the participation of so little-known actors, Jolie managed to make a good picture. But, unfortunately, Angelina's film can not be called good.

The play of actors in this tape is not called talented or emotional. Rather, many performers look neutral on the screen, sometimes even hesitantly. Who can you see in the frame of the "Unshaken"?

As already mentioned, the main role went to the British Jack O'Connell, and as a Japanese tormentor, the singer Miyavi performed. A close friend of Zamperini and a colleague was played by Domnal Gleason (Boyfriend from the Future), and Garett Hedlund, who starred in the legendary Troy, this time got the image of John Fitzgerald. Jay Courtney ("Terminator: Genesis") got the role of Hugh Cappernella, Finn Whittrock ("Noah") played Francis McNamara, and Alex Russell appeared on the screen in the image of his brother Louis Zamperini.

Premiere

The film "Unbroken", which was reviewed in late December 2014, was first shown in Australia in November. In December, the band was able to watch the residents of Canada, the United States, Spain and Britain.

In early 2015, "Unshaken" was presented to film enthusiasts in Western and Eastern Europe. Later, the whole picture will be seen by the Japanese - only in February 2016. But for sure curious already quenched their interest by reading the ribbon on the Internet.

Cash gathering

The film has fully paid back its cost in the box office: at a cost of 65 million dollars, 163 million were raised. This is not the final figure, as the picture will be demonstrated in early 2016 in several other countries.

Negative reviews of film critics are often associated with many mistakes made in the film. For example, pilots wear uniforms instead of flying suits, which looks very strange. And the girls appear in the frame in dresses, the style of which will be developed only ten years after the described events. And this is far from a complete list of the film loops found in the tape "Unshaken".

Critic reviews of a positive nature make up just over half of all the other reviews. We can say that the picture provoked numerous disputes. On the one hand, Jolie took in the development of an original story that can not leave the viewer indifferent. On the other hand, all critics agree more or less with the statement that the actress should not have climbed to directing: much more could be squeezed out of this plot, and Jolie limited herself to a meager description of the events, and did not give the whole story an interesting form.

Viewers' comments

Less critical were the usual viewers for the film "Unshaken": reviews, reviews coming from them, provided a rating of 7.20 on the IMDb website.

Positive feedback came primarily from fans of the actress, who admire her beauty and respect the humanitarian work of Jolie. Admired fans in advance favorably approached Angelina's project called "Unshaken." The review from this category of viewers boiled down to the following: history touched the depths of the soul, Louis Zamperini - an outstanding personality. Spectators sincerely admire the strength of spirit and the protagonist's endurance, but the circumstances under which this power is revealed were spelled out in the script. And where is the merit of Angelina?

Many agree that Louis Zamperini's story is worthy of a better adaptation. All the events described in the film could be given a more interesting and original visual form. Then two hours of the picture would not seem like an eternity, and Angelina Jolie herself would no longer be reproached for lack of director talent.
