Red spots on the leaves of the currant - cause for concern

Any change in the shape and color of the currant leaves, the appearance of stains on them should alert even an inexperienced horticulturist. After all, this indicates a disease, and the sooner a disease is discovered and the appropriate measures are taken, the greater the chances to preserve both the harvest and the shrub itself.

So, the red spots on the currant leaves, as a rule, indicate a fungal disease. By their size, shape and nature of distribution, one can understand what the plant is infected with. If you noticed in the spring red bumps on the branches, and by the summer the leaves began to drizzle and dry, then the bush is infected with tuberculosis. This disease spreads from one shoot to another, calmly tolerates winter cold. Therefore, you can get rid of it if you remove and burn all infected branches and leaves. To prevent its development early in the spring, all shoots should be sprinkled with copper sulfate.

If you saw on the leaves of currant red spots without clearly defined edges, then, most likely, the plant is damaged by askohitosis. At first, the center of the brown spot brightens, crackles, and the dead part of the leaf simply falls out. Fungus, which causes this disease, easily tolerates winter in fallen leaves. Prevent infection can be if in the early spring to spray copper sulphate. But remember, the procedure must be repeated twice more: immediately after flowering and after harvesting. All fallen leaves must be collected and burned, and soil under a bush to dig.

But askohitoz on the black currant can flow a little differently. Only in the second half of the summer may appear whitish or red spots on the currant leaves, unevenly scattered across all the plates. They are not large, they almost do not drop in the middle, and closer to the autumn, in the affected areas fruit bodies are formed, in which the mushroom will winter.

Also, red spots on the currant leaves may indicate its infection with columnar rust. The disease appears in the middle of summer: the yellow spots appear quickly enough to brown, orange pads with spores form on the underside of the leaf blade. If the disease spreads quickly, the leaves wither and fall early.

Small, round or angular red spots on the currant leaves is a clear sign of septoriosis. Over time, they become lighter, but their fringe remains brown. The disease affects not only shoots, but also berries. Because of it, the leaves of the plant dry out and fall off, and the yield is significantly reduced. Prevent infection by spraying shrubs in early spring with copper sulfate. But if this was not done on time, and the currant was infected with Septoria, then the soil under the bushes should be digged, and the fallen leaves burned. These same methods should be used if currant is infected with cercosporesis. It is characterized by the formation of brown spots with a dark center and light edges, which increase in size, merging into one.

If you find any of the diseases, it is necessary to take all necessary measures as soon as possible. In this case, know that, despite all the useful substances contained in them, it is better not to use the infected currant leaves. Their properties, of course, persist, but you will eat fungi that infected the bush.
