Paper-art. Paper-art bottles. Technique of paper art: a master class

Embroidery and origami, patchwork and weaving of beads, quilling and scrapbooking, decoupage, paper art and felting - all these kinds of needlework. It seems that all of them have helped to decorate human life since ancient times. However, not all of the above types of manual art have a long history. In this article, we will find out what is the paper art, who and when it came up, and also consider its basic techniques and techniques.

A little bit about paper

Despite the abundance of various gadgets and various modern materials, the paper, which came to us from the depths of centuries, is constantly with us, whether we notice it or not. It can be different: white and colored, velvet and parchment, roll and sheet.

From early childhood, interaction with paper begins: the children draw on it, and from it, under the guidance of adults, a variety of crafts are made. At school it is on paper that we learn to write and count. Growing up, some people do not cease to interact with it enthusiastically and create unique works of art.

Who is the author of the technique?

In 2006, the head of the Nikolaev Studio of Art and Literary Creativity, the artist, poetess and designer Tatyana Sorokina decided to introduce something new and unusual to her pupils. As a result of this desire and enthusiasm Tatyana began to teach children to work with paper, namely with paper napkins.

Initially, the technique was called "Napkin Plastic." Under this name, the children's works of Sorokin's students won the Grand Prix and the first place at the International Festival of Children's Creativity.

In the future, the unusual technique of paper plastic attracted the attention of many craftsmen and for a short time became very popular.

What it is?

The name "paper art" originated from the English word combination Paper Art, translated as "paper art". In the process of communication between the masters, the correct "paper art", lost one of the letters and shrunk to the form of "paper art". It is this name that is accepted everywhere now. This technique of imitating various textures and textures, as well as decorating surfaces with paper napkins, is completely different than decoupage.

The main "highlight" of paper art is the creation of imitations of expensive and complex art works, such as weaving and embossing, embroidery and carving.

What is the difference from other types of needlework?

Those who are slightly familiar with different types of needlework, will say that decoupage, scrapbooking, quilling and paper art are techniques that use paper and are similar in nature.

Indeed, in all the above types of creativity working with paper, but that's only the techniques and techniques for each of them are different, and the results are completely different.

Let's take a short look, than the paper-art differs from the same quilling or decoupage, with which it is often confused.

Differences from quilling

The very name "quilling" comes from the word quill - a bird's feather. It was on him wound earlier thin strips of paper to get a spiral, from which in the future collect volumetric or flat compositions. The paper uses dyed paper of different density, as well as special devices.

In the paper art, unlike quilling, there is no strictly defined form of the basic elements. Flagellar strings of paper are just the starting material from which you can create any shape and pattern. In addition, a thin paper - napkins - is used in the paper-art.

Decoupage and paper art

Decoupage - needlework is quite old and popular all over the world. In the process of its execution, the motives cut from special paper or napkins are applied to a previously prepared surface. After further processing and varnishing, the ornaments look like hand-painted.

Style of paper art is completely different. When decorating objects on the surface, a volume and an invoice are created. Common to these types of needlework is that each of them imitates some other kind of arts and crafts, as well as the material used - thin paper napkins.

Recently, the technique of decoupage is actively developing the direction of "volumetric", or as it is also called 3D decoupage. But unlike paper art, not only paper, but also other materials, such as salted dough, various plastics and clay for crafts, are used to create volumes.

General principles

In order to make a paper art-craft, you need the most simple, junk materials and tools. Ordinary paper napkins, glue, water and an object that you want to decorate.

The essence of the technique is that thin paper or napkins make paper threads, with which an image is laid on a flat surface of the object. The image can be painted and fixed with PVA glue, and in some cases with varnish.

And now your attention will be presented to a simple and accessible technique of paper art, a master class on which will help to understand the basic techniques of decoration. We decorate the most ordinary glass bottle.

We prepare materials

We will need:

  • water;
  • The most common paper napkins (preferably simple white ones);
  • PVA glue;
  • Paint in aerosol cans;
  • Varnish;
  • Glass bottle (for the first experiment is not the largest and not very complex shape).

Step-by-step instruction

  1. Before you perform paper-art bottles, it needs to be washed and cleaned of the remains of the labels.
  2. On the cleaned surface of the bottle we apply PVA glue and glue it in small pieces, torn off or cut off from a paper napkin. A napkin is better to take a monophonic and light, as it may be difficult to paint over.
  3. The easiest way is to start gluing from the bottom of the bottle. Gluing the bottom half, you need to let it dry well, and only then continue to glue the top.
  4. After the whole bottle has been pasted, once again grease it with PVA glue and leave to dry.
  5. While the glue dries, you can prepare everything you need to further decorate the bottle in the technique of paper-art. First of all, we cut from napkins strips in width from 1 to 1.5 cm.
  6. We take a small bowl of warm water, moisten the palms a little and begin to twist the flagella from the cut out paper strips. Strive to get a perfectly flat and one-piece tourniquet is not worth it. In the future, any work is useful: thin and thick, long and short "cords". (The author of the technique Tatyana Sorokina recommends for a few seconds to lower the strips of paper clamped with plastic scissors or tweezers into a container with water, and then twist the strands.) Try which option is more convenient for you, so use it!)
  7. When they are stocked enough, take the glue, the flagellum, and, connecting the imagination, we begin to spread out from the paper blanks all sorts of geometric shapes, original flowers, abstractions - everything that fantasy dictates. First of all, you need to lay out the contours of the largest drawings. (Previously, on a dried surface of a bottle, you can sketch a future pattern with a simple pencil, it is easier to lay out patterns, especially for children.)
  8. In addition to manufactured yarn from paper for crafts in the technique of paper art, you can use small seashells, pebbles, dried flowers and leaves. To create a beautiful ornament, you can take figured pasta, which today are produced of the most unusual and interesting forms, for example, various coils and curls, asterisks and alphabet. (Important: Be sure to carefully glaze with PVA glue every detail that you are going to fix on the bottle.)
  9. After all the parts are securely fastened, it will take a little time for the glue to dry, and only then can you start painting. For a paper-art bottle, it is better to use acrylic or gouache paints, although the car aerosol is "lying down" well. Gouache and acrylic is preferable if you do handmade with children: unlike aerosol, it practically does not smell, and dries much faster.
  10. The paint can be applied in several layers, before waiting for the complete drying of the previous one.
  11. After all the layers of paint have completely dried, the bottle, if it was painted with acrylic paints, can be varnished on an acrylic base. If the staining was done with gouache, it is better to use a cheap hair spray, applying it in several steps.

As you could see, the technique of paper art, the master class of which is fairly simple, still requires attentiveness, diligence and concentration.

A few secrets from the masters

In any needlework there are small secrets and tricks, the knowledge of which helps to get better and more accurate products. Pape art is no exception.

So, experienced masters advise using a thin towel for rolling napkins. As a result, the bundles will be made more even and neat. Due to the fact that the cloth surface of the towel absorbs excess moisture, the strips do not "swell" when twisting.

You can roll paper threads with a wet cloth napkin on dry or vice versa. Every master has his own way of making harnesses.

In addition to napkins, you can use other thin paper products, such as paper kitchen towels or cosmetic napkins.

It is important to remember that all the time, while the strands are curled, they must be wet. In this case, they will not lose elasticity and will easily take the necessary shape.

Human hands are almost universal. But in order to get a smooth spiral or circle, you can use a wooden skewer-skewer or a plastic comb with sparse teeth.

In the process of laying out the pattern you will need toothpicks - they are very convenient to adjust the strands on the surface of the bottle.

To improve the quality of the product, after the pattern has been fixed and laid out, it is necessary to cover the entire surface with PVA glue, diluted with water in a 1: 1 ratio.

Possibilities of combining with other techniques

Modern masters actively use decoupage in the technique of paper art to create a variety of art objects. To decorate a bottle, casket or vase, you can use the plot you liked, "beating" it with three-dimensional elements made of paper flagella. So, the sea theme can be decorated with three-dimensional seashells, starfish and waves, and for winter and New Year decorations snowflakes and various fur-tree toys will suit.

The most important thing in any kind of decorative and applied creativity is the possibility of creativity and self-expression, not limited to any framework and barriers. This kind of art as paper art gives each person the opportunity to make something completely different from thin paper napkins, create the illusion of turning the simplest paper into metal, wood or textured fabric and create unique works that will be decorated with imitation of these materials. Find some time and feel yourself the creator of new, unique things, a wizard, who are subject to the most incredible transformations!
