One of the main characters in A. Dumas's novel is Athos, Count de La Fere

Interest in the novels of A. Dumas-father (1802-1870) does not die out largely due to his characters. They are full of active, energetic and cheerful attitude to reality, which they dynamically and tirelessly transform. Noble Count de La Fere for all his melancholy never hesitates, if his friends need help.

About the author and his works

The trilogy about the Musketeers was written from 1844 to 1850. These three works are loved by readers thanks to intrigue, which keeps in suspense, flamboyant dialogues and characters of the main characters who are loyal to the noble code of honor and their friendship. In addition, they are not only fictitious persons, but also historical characters. The musketeers in all novels are opposed to the nobles, who are characterized by arrogance, cunning and callousness. The very first novel "Three Musketeers" immediately showed A. Dumas as a master who can imagine the story in the form of a colorful action filled with violent intrigues, duels, conspiracies, built on the contrasts of good and evil. The trilogy covers a significant period in the history of France from 1625 until the time when the monarchy of Louis XIV unleashed a war in Holland, capturing foreign lands. We will turn our attention to the ideal nobleman that was Athos, the Comte de La Fere.

Environment of Mr. Athos

Melancholic, immersed in his thoughts, the mysterious Athos serves in the regiment of royal musketeers. His real name is known only to M. de Treville. To Athos, all are treated with great respect, not only because he has a perfect sword, but also because he has undoubted nobility. It manifests itself in every gesture, in every word or deed. At the very beginning of the novel, the severely wounded Athos is, at the behest of his boss, an appointment with him. He, impeccably dressed, tight-fitting, enters the office with a firm step, and M. de Treville throws himself joyfully at him, shaking his hand firmly. No one understood how badly Athos felt: he had such an excerpt when he arrived in the regiment, fulfilling his duty. Therefore, when after a stormy greeting he falls into a swoon, everyone is amazed. Porthos and Aramis gently carry Athos on their hands, followed by a healer. It should be emphasized that the friendship of these young people, very different in character, bears respect for each other and active participation in joint activities. Mr. Athos is older than his friends, he is about thirty years old, and he treats them with special patronage, which no one disputes. Especially he will allocate the young Mr. D'Artagnan, when he is recognized by his friend as an inseparable trinity after a misunderstanding.

How Mr. Athos took part in common affairs

In the first part of the novel, when D'Artagnan goes to England to save the queen from imminent disgrace, if she does not have diamond pendants at the ball, the Count de La Fere, whom no one else knows by this name, invites friends to accompany and guard their young friend , Not delving into the essence of the commission. It is entrusted to D'Artagnan and must remain his secret. Unqualified trust between friends is the basis of their relationship. Later, in the second part, after listening to the conversation between Cardinal Richelieu and my Lady, the earl shows, as always, incredible restraint and self-control and takes from his ex-wife, who believed dead, a document signed by the cardinal and giving her the right to destroy D'Artagnan's hated her at any moment. Count gravely puts a gun to her forehead and promises to shoot for one or two seconds. Countess Winter perfectly understands that no tricks of seduction will not help her cope with the iron character of her ex-wife, and with malice gives such an important paper.

Analysis of the name of the graph

The name Athos is written in French as Athos. What is consonant with the name Mount Athos in Greece. Therefore, when he deliberately goes to the Bastille instead of D'Artagnan, and behaves in it quite independently and unperturbed, then in the 13th chapter the Commissioner of the Bastille nervously yells: "Yes this is not a man, but a mountain!" The names of all the Musketeers Dumas borrowed from the book Sandra, and they puzzled the writer. Athos, Porthos and Aramis existed in reality. From scant information it is known that Athos was born in the province of Béarn. He had a great sword and died in 1643, most likely after one of the duels, as his body was found near the market of Pre-o-Claire, a favorite place for duelists. In addition, when Dumas worked on this image, it is assumed that he had in mind his friend Mr. Adolf Leven. He was a Swedish count and in a fatherly manner brought up young Dumas. Their friendship lasted throughout the writer's entire life.

Portrait, exterior image of the Count de La Fur

Very shortly the writer depicts Athos: "He was beautiful body and soul." Once again, in passing, he mentions graceful white hands, which, unlike Aramis, he did not particularly care for. At the beginning of the action he is about 30 years old, after twenty years he speaks of his age - 49 years, and in the last part of the trilogy he was already 61 years old.

Speech characteristic

The speech of the graph is always very concise, and he speaks only in the matter. He speaks the language better than the eloquent Aramis. Athos was able to correct the incorrectly applied temporary verbs of his friend. From the text it is clear that he received a very good education and freely, with a grin, understands Latin, which is often used by the same Aramis. The Count de La Fere is so laconic, that he taught his servant Grimaud to communicate with him only with signs, without using speech. In noisy companies, he prefers to remain silent. All are accustomed to these oddities and perceive them as an integral feature of the character. The Count of La Fere was very distinguished from the Musketeers, who, in comparison with him, were much less refined.

In which apartment did Athos live

The hero shot two modest rooms on Feru Street near the Luxembourg Gardens. He had three subjects that he valued very highly. First, the sword hanging on the wall, which belonged to the time of Francis I. It is richly decorated, especially the hilt, with precious stones. Secondly, he had a ceremonial portrait of a grandee in a graceful suit of the era of Henry III with the Order of St. Spirit on the chest. Athos was like him. Their common features spoke of the fact that this nobleman is an ancestor of a simple musketeer. Thirdly, he had a casket of amazing jewelry work, on which was applied the same coat of arms as a portrait and a sword.

Self-control and counting

When the Musketeers and D'Artagnan came to gather in La Rochelle, no one had money for the outfit. Athos, Comte de La Fere, did not fuss. He lay down on the bed and said that the money would come to him. They came in the form of a family ring with a sapphire surrounded by diamonds, which once belonged to him, but he gave it to him on the night of love. This ring was shown to the count by the guard D'Artagnan, who received it from Lady Winter. His friends sold it, and the money was divided equally. So they prepared for a military campaign.

Acquaintance with the life of Athos

D'Artagnan learned of the previous life of Athos by accident. He freed his friend from the cellar with wine, where he spent two weeks in voluntary confinement. The continuous use of wine made Athos more talkative, and he told his young friend the story of his marriage to a beautiful woman who turned out to be a thief with a brand on her shoulder. The Count de La Fere did not hesitate for a while and hung it, believing that she was dead, went to serve the king as a simple musketeer. But, as it turned out later, this clever person got out and stayed alive. Her names were Anna Beyle, Baxon Charlotte, Lady Winter. The Comte de La Fere found out all this before making the trial of her and handing it over to the executioner. Finally, the criminal who killed her husband, Count Winter, who killed Madame Bonacieux, the naive Protestant Felton and the young monk, is dead forever. There it is dear. But not everything is so simple.

The book "The Word in Defense of the Count da La Fer" by K. Kostina

According to the readers, it is long and rather boring. It consists mainly of reasoning, which is so, then they turn the story of how the count hung his wife when he saw a brand on her shoulder. After the time spent on her reading, she comforts only one thing: in the "Word in defense of the Count de La Fere" the author nevertheless justifies the count and considers his deed correct. It is unclear why it was wasted so many words to make a trivial conclusion. Milady was introduced to us by the author. She was for him the embodiment of absolute evil. Dumas was convinced of this. What other proofs are required?

Meeting D'Artagnan and Cardinal Richelieu

Cardinal calmly reacted to the death of the dangerous lady Winter. He gave a patent for the rank of lieutenant to the young man, saying that he can enter any name in it. With the patent D'Artagnan hurried to Athos, but he refused this rank, saying: "This is too little for the Count de La Fere."

How has Athos changed after his retirement

Having received the inheritance, the count went to his ancestral castle Bragelonne. He completely changed, raising a foster son. The count gave up drinking and became a role model for a growing child. The son of the Count de La Fere revived him to life, with him, his exhausted soul became younger. He could not give him his title. However, he did not leave him as a commoner either. The title of Raul, the son of the Count de La Fere, is the Viscount de Bragelonne. He grew up in a simple but refined setting with family portraits, coined silver tableware and became a copy of his noble father: a handsome young man who is not ashamed to present in the high society his mother - the Duchess de Chevreuse. The young man is brought up according to all the laws of honor that can be found in the novel and which are peculiar to his father: directness, endurance, composure, protection of the weak. The young Chevalier is true to this word. He will not tolerate the humiliation of his dignity from anybody and is able to support a friend, show mercy to the defeated enemy, knows how to keep secrets, is ready to always fulfill his duty.

Attitude to Athos of other characters

According to the author, the earl is an ideal of a nobleman and a model for imitation. He does not tolerate even the slightest humiliation, is faithful to the word of honor, knows how to keep secrets, both his own and those of strangers, always supports his comrades, is ready for a sacrifice in the name of duty. Enemies respect him, and dodgy and curious D'Artagnan - simply idolizes, realizing that he will never reach the aristocratic behavior of Athos, even in small things. His influence is also subordinated to Aramis and Porthos, who tacitly acknowledge his superiority. He immediately puts the discharged Porthos in the background of his elegance, making in a simple musketeer cloak a mere step and his head thrown back. No one knows better than him how to arrange a dinner and sit down guests. Athos is generous: having no soul after soul, after a duel with the English at an inn he gives the purse of the defeated servant, but not his own, but English. With this noble deed, he amazes everyone, both the French and their opponents.

Evaluation of the novel and its heroes by contemporaries of Dumas and in our time

The novel-feuilleton was published according to the chapters, which ended in the most interesting places. Readers eagerly awaited the next issue of the newspaper. This kept them in suspense and became one of the reasons for the popularity of the novel. Intrigues and political events (the execution of Charles I, the English king) draw attention to the Dumas trilogy. The unfading images of the heroes make up the appeal of Dumas's works today, among which, in particular, is the name of Athos, the Count of La Fere.
