Lefortovo tunnel on the third transport ring

The Lefortovo tunnel was opened for traffic in December 2003. It was, of course, the most difficult engineering area of the third transport ring of the capital. The erection of this, in many respects unique, structures faced with great difficulties even at the stage of its design. The route of the third transport ring was to pass through the historic Moscow historical district of Lefortovo. And this fact led to a lively public discussion on whether it is possible to sacrifice historical and cultural heritage for the convenience of driving. Public opinion then triumphed, the motorway of the third transport ring under his pressure was forced to leave the surface of the earth in the Lefortovo tunnel. The visual appearance of the historic Lefortovo district did not suffer from it. But financially, such a project was very costly.

Lefortovo tunnel, its engineering features

The construction of this structure lasted several years, and with its completion the third transport ring became closed. The length of the Lefortovo tunnel is 3 kilometers 200 meters. It passes under the area of historical development Lefortovo, Lefortovo Park and the Yauza River. In a constructive sense, the Lefortovo tunnel is a junction of two tunnel underground spaces. The tunnel of deep occurrence consists of three lanes, along which the transport goes in the north direction along the outer side of the third transport ring. And on the inside of the car are moving south along the four lanes. The internal part of this engineering structure is a combination of an overpass and a tunnel on different sections of the road. The long underground route is at a high level equipped with safety and life support systems. They include ventilation, lighting and drainage. Throughout the entire underground space, a gas contamination control system functions. In the event of a fire, a forced emergency ventilation system is provided. The track is equipped with a video surveillance system behind the flow of traffic in both directions. More than ten years of operation experience of this complex engineering structure allows us to state with certainty that the Lefortovo tunnel on the map of the transport infrastructure of the capital is a positive example of an effective logistics solution. It allows to organize in the optimal way an intensive flow of transport on a very tense section of the transport system in Moscow.

Problems of the Lefortovo Tunnel

Far from all is well in the field of traffic safety in both directions of this engineering structure. But the high accident rate is mainly due to the irrational application of anti-icing agents in winter. Slippery areas occur periodically on several sections of the track, which leads to numerous drifts and collisions. Especially when the speed limit is not respected.
