Eye drops are aqueous (oily) solutions or the finest suspensions of medicines. These medicines are subject to increased requirements for sterility and stability. Eye drops should not contain any mechanical impurities visible to the naked eye.

Due to the fact that the solvent in the formulation is usually water, their therapeutic effect does not differ in duration. This, in turn, necessitates more frequent instillations. Such drugs have a longer lasting effect.
