Ethernet technology and its development

Ethernet technology - the most common for the organization of local networks. Today their number exceeds the figure of five million. If we talk about computers that are equipped with Ethernet cards, they are much larger.

What does this concept mean in the narrow sense? This is a network standard, which was based on the experimental network of the Internet Network. It was developed by the company Xerox, it was implemented in the seventy-fifth year of the last century. Although this method was tested much earlier in the radio network of a single University of Hawaii. It happened in the second half of the sixties of the twentieth century. Then all kinds of ways of random access to the general radio environment were used. Called this method then Aloha.

Ethernet technology in the eightieth year of the twentieth century has undergone changes. The companies Dec, Intel and Xerox jointly created, and also published the Ethernet 2 standard for the network. It was based on a coaxial cable, which became the latest version of this proprietary standard for Ethernet technology. That's why this version is called Ethernet DIX or 2.

Based on this standard, another one was developed, called IEEE 802.3. He has a lot in common with his predecessor, but some differences, this technology still has Ethernet. While in the new version the MAC and LLC levels differ from each other, both of their levels were combined into one channel with its older brother. The DIX version defines a configuration verification protocol, which is missing a new version. Yes, and the frame format is slightly different, however, the maximum and minimum frame sizes for both standards are the same.

Ethernet IEEE technology is often called 802.3, while DIX is simply called Ethernet, without any notation. This is done in order to distinguish the new standard from the previous one. Depending on the type of physical environment used, IEEE 802.3 Ethernet technology provides different variations (10 Base-5 with 10 Base-2, 10Base-T with 10Base-FL and finally 10Base-FB).

In the ninety-fifth year of the twentieth century, a standard was adopted, which was called Fast Ethernet. It will be fair to say that in many ways it is not independent. This is confirmed by the fact that its simple description is an addition to the basic 802.3 standard - the 802.3i section. Similarly, in 1998 a new Gigabit Ethernet was adopted, which is described in another section of 802.3z of this basic document.

To send and receive binary information on the cord for all types at the physical level, Ethernet technology, which provides a throughput of ten megabits per second, uses the Manchester code. Absolutely all Ethernet standards, together with the last two, use an identical method for dividing the environment during data transmission. It's called CSMA / CD.

We have gone over the whole history of this technology. The other day she was already forty years old. Despite this, it is still popular. Today, of course, new and more convenient technologies are emerging, but, most likely, Ethernet technology will continue to provide many years of work for our networks, because it is reliable, practical, and safely used for many decades.
