Chelyabinsk Metallurgical Plant: history, address, products, management

Chelyabinsk Metallurgical Plant is a part of Mechel Holding and is one of the largest enterprises of the country in its industry. Formation of the plant was in the wartime, but today its products are in demand in almost all sectors of the economy of Russia.

Bakal's ore

Chelyabinsk Metallurgical Plant was built in the basin of the Bakalsky deposit. For the first time, Petro Ryabov discovered, in 1756, according to some extant information. For the development of the deposit took the Siberian merchants Tverdyshev and Myasnikov. Until 1900, very few minerals were mined, the total number did not exceed 2 million tons, while the siderite ore reserves were estimated at one billion tons.

The first wave of industrialization fell on the tsarist rule, and over the next 14 years the pace of development of the field accelerated, by 1914 the extraction amounted to 2 million tons. In the same period, plans were made for the construction of several metallurgical plants, for which geological exploration was carried out. The historical events of the following years did not allow the idea to develop.

Prolonged construction

In the early 1930s, the Soviet government introduced an industrialization plan, the main core of which was heavy industry and a military complex, of which Chelyabinsk Metallurgical Plant was to become a part. The history of construction began with an appropriate resolution, published in May 1930. According to the plans, the company was supposed to produce special heat-resistant steels, including those with alloying additives, which corresponded to the needs of the domestic market.

For a while, the construction slowed down the process of choosing a site for the plant, the laying took place on the Pershinskaya site in 1934, and the following year the facility was frozen. One of the reasons was the shortage of equipment, the industry of the USSR was not yet able to fully provide a full range of machines, and there were no funds for purchasing abroad. All works were stopped before the Great Patriotic War.

Everything for the front

Almost before the very beginning of hostilities, it was decided to resume construction work. Chelyabinsk Metallurgical Plant, after commissioning of the first stage, was to produce 600 thousand tons of pig iron and 150 thousand tons of steel from five electric steel smelting furnaces. The problem with the lack of equipment was resolved with the evacuation of metallurgical plants (Alchevsk, Stalingrad, Zaporizhstal, Novolipetsk) in October-November 1941.

The first stage of construction was commissioned in record time, only nine months was required from the moment of pouring the first cubic meter of concrete to the release of the first ton of metal. By 1945, the production of pig iron and steel reached the planned volumes, for the entire period of the war the Chelyabinsk Metallurgical Plant smelted 300,000 tons of pig iron, 145,000 tons of steel, and 105,000 tons of rolled metal. For a short period at the enterprise, they installed and started a full cycle of metallurgical production, including:

  • Five electric arc furnaces.
  • Two coke batteries.
  • Two blast furnaces.
  • Two steel rolling mills.
  • Cogeneration plant.

Postwar years

In peacetime, the importance of industrial enterprises has not diminished, and over time, the Chelyabinsk Metallurgical Combine has become a leader in the supply of steel for the defense industry, science-intensive industries, but there are also peaceful tasks. Restoration of the ruined economy, the residential sector required new materials, several types of current products were mastered at their enterprise:

  • High quality grade metal.
  • Stainless sheet of two kinds of riding (cold and hot).
  • Forgings of heat-resistant steel.
  • Forgings of special steels.

Also, the Chelyabinsk Metallurgical Plant has mastered new production technologies:

  • Smelting aging steel.
  • Production of steels with lead content.
  • Manufacture of transformer steel by sulphide variant.
  • Technology of melting metals in plasma-arc furnaces.
  • Rental of refractory metals and much more.

Transformation phase

In the post-perestroika period the Chelyabinsk Metallurgical Combine passed through a difficult period of transformation. The enterprise managed not only to survive, but also to expand due to production of metal products of mass production. There were plans to eliminate several cycles, which resulted in successful modernization. Instead of open-hearth energy production facilities, new electric arc furnaces, continuous casting plants and other equipment were installed.

In 2001 the Chelyabinsk Metallurgical Plant (Chelyabinsk) became part of the Mechel Group, which resulted in a large-scale modernization aimed at the use and introduction of innovative technologies at all stages of production. By 2004 the blast furnace No. 1 was modernized, the result was an increase in the working volume to 2,030 cubic meters (1,719 cubic meters), and productivity increased to 1.5 million tons of pig iron per year (there were 1 million tons). Also, an electronic monitoring and control system was installed, allowing to monitor all processes in real time. In addition to this production, new equipment went to the electric steel smelting shops No. 2 and No. 6, the heating plant, the oxygen-converter shop, to the small-grade mill 250, etc.

To date, modernization has been carried out in the main workshops and production lines. In 2013, the company entered the construction of a mill to produce high-quality shaped products and rails up to 100 meters long. Capacity of full cycle production is 1.1 million tons of products per year. The basic deliveries are carried out within the framework of the program "Strategies for the development of railway transport", calculated until 2030. In 2014, the products successfully passed the certification procedure.

Prospects

Plans for development at the enterprise are associated with promising areas of metal consumption in the domestic market, which requires further technical and technological modernization. The main requirement of modern production is the abandonment of energy-consuming equipment, for which the Chelyabinsk Metallurgical Plant purchases new lines in the steel casting department, implements the upgrade project for the slab caster, and builds two new out-of-furnace metal processing complexes.

In the plans for the development of industry of Russia declared the implementation of large infrastructure projects in engineering, construction. To adequately occupy a niche, the Chelyabinsk Metallurgical Plant (Mechel) is building a universal mill, modernizing the equipment of the rolling shop No. 4, the planned result is a planned increase in capacity to 1.1 million tons of finished products per year, buys additional equipment for the rolling shop of stainless steel .

Production

Chelyabinsk Metallurgical Plant produces:

  • Hot-rolled sections for hire.
  • Molded rods.
  • Stainless steel sheets are hot-rolled and cold-rolled.
  • Sheets hot-rolled from ordinary steel.
  • Sheets of steel with increased strength.
  • Reinforcing steel grades from A1 to A5.

Environment and social policy

JSC "Chelyabinsk Metallurgical Plant" pays much attention to environmental protection, for which the work of the specialized service of the plant is activated. The enterprise controls the amount and content of harmful emissions into the atmosphere, and monitors the influence of the industrial environment on water resources and the air basin.

The nature protection program has been introduced in the company since 2007, which gave a tangible result in reducing the negative impact. The number of discharges into water bodies is halved, emissions to the atmosphere have decreased. Out of operation, technically and morally obsolete equipment is removed, which reduces the risks for nature. At the second stage of reconstruction of the plant, the cost of environmental protection will amount to more than 3 billion rubles.

The Chelyabinsk Combine is one of the few that has preserved social facilities whose main task is to provide recreation, leisure and medical care for the plant's personnel. Several recreation centers, dispensaries, cultural centers, sports complex, children's camps remain on the balance of the company, and all employees can use them. A lot of attention is paid to professional training and career growth for everyone who wants to connect their life with the plant.

Official Information

In September 2016 ChMK received a new director, he became Anatoly Petrovich Shchetinin, for whom the plant is a native enterprise. Here he started his career as a foreman of the bottling shop, and since 2001 he worked as deputy head of the Chelyabinsk Metallurgical Plant, and then changed several managerial positions at the production facilities of the Mechel holding.
