On the highway E95 you can get from the Ukrainian capital to Chernigov in just one and a half to two hours.

Today the contour of the Chernigov shaft is decorated with 12 cast-iron cannons cast in the 17th and 18th centuries. Their city was allegedly given by Peter I, as a token of gratitude for the participation of the Chernigov Cossacks in the Battle of Poltava. By the way, all the guests of the city are offered to find the thirteenth gun on the shaft. But so far no one has been able to do this. The existence of the 13th cast-iron gun is one of the main urban legends of Chernigov.

On the shaft you can see two beautiful buildings. The first is the Chernigov collegium of the early 18th century, and the second is the so-called Lizogub house (the 17th century). It is also called the house of Ivan Mazepa. According to legend, the Ukrainian hetman hid under the foundation of the building untold treasures.

Walking along the Chernigov rampart, one can also see one of the most beautiful and unusual monuments of Taras Shevchenko in Ukraine. The poet is depicted here as a young man, which is extremely rare.

The Transfiguration Cathedral is the oldest building in Ukraine

This five-domed church is one of the oldest religious buildings in all of Ukraine. It was laid back in 1031. In the interiors of the cathedral preserved the ancient columns, the floor and the remains of wall murals. It is here that Prince Igor is buried, sung in the famous "The Lay of Igor's Regiment".

Some historians have suggested that the masters who worked on this Chernigov temple and Sophia of Kiev were from the same artel. The size of the building is quite large: 18 by 27 meters. The temple is suspended on six pillars and has three apses. The facades of the cathedral are decorated with beautiful brickwork and pilasters.

Two side towers of the Savior's Transfiguration Church were built up much later, in the 18th century.

Boldiny mountains and their attractions

Baldin mountains - one of the urban areas of Chernigov. Here is the Troitsko-Ilyinsky Monastery, which was founded back in 1069 by Antony Pechersky. In 1775 a tall four-tiered bell tower (height - 58 meters) was erected, which today is the dominant of this whole district of the city.

Antony Caves - one of the most interesting monuments not only on the Baldin Mountains, but throughout Chernigov. This underground monastery was founded by Antony Pechersky as far back as the 11th century and continued to develop until the end of the 18th century. It consists of four tiers, two of which have not been investigated. The total length of the whole complex is 350 meters.

In the Anthony caves tourists can explore several unique underground churches. The most famous of them is the temple of Theodosius of Totem. The church is made in the style of Ukrainian baroque and is decorated with arches, pilasters and semicolumns. Its height reaches 8.5 meters, this is the largest underground church in Ukraine.

Sights of Chernigov for children

Temples, museums and historical monuments are objects that are of interest primarily to adults. And how can you take young children in this city of Ukraine? In Chernigov there are also such institutions.

So, on the Victory Avenue, the puppet theater named after O. Dovzhenko has been working for several decades. With its interesting and at the same time quite understandable representations, this theater has brought up several generations of children. But on Odintsov Street there is another unusual children's art theater - "Balaganchik". The institution has been working for seven years. During this time, over a thousand show programs, concerts and various events were staged here.

Without a doubt, every child will enjoy spending time in the entertainment complex "Children's Planet". This institution has a large play area, an intricate labyrinth, a pool with balls and the largest in Chernigov trampoline.

Interesting places in Chernihiv region

Not only Chernihiv is rich and interesting area of the same name. Dozens of other places and settlements can be visited here. For example, the city of Nezhin, which is famous for its ancient snow-white temples and delicious cucumbers. You can also look into the town of Kozelets, where the cathedral of the Nativity of the Virgin is preserved - the most beautiful monument of Ukrainian baroque architecture.

The grandiose palace complex was preserved in Kachanovka. The estate was laid by the favorite of Catherine II Count Rumiantsev-Zadunaisky in 1770. However, in the pompous and large-scale architectural complex it was turned by Grigory Tarnovsky already in the XIX century. Until today, preserved a grand palace in the style of classicism, an outbuilding with a tower, the Glinka pavilion and a picturesque park around the estate.
