Lari is the monetary unit of Georgia

The monetary unit of Georgia is called lari (put into circulation in 1995), which, in turn, is divided into one hundred Tetri. International currency code GEL.

Short story

The modern monetary unit of Georgia became official in the country in the presidency of E. Shevardnadze, namely since 1995. The symbol of the national currency was introduced on July 8, 2014. The basis for the design of the symbol was the letter of the Georgian alphabet ლ (l).

In circulation on the territory of the country there are both paper banknotes of lari and metal coins. Below the article will separately consider bills and coins.

Coins

In Georgia, the main monetary unit of lari is used most often in the form of paper bills, but there are coins with a face value of one and two lari. Most of the metal coins are still less than the lari. In circulation there are coins in one tetry, two, five, ten, twenty and fifty tetri.

All Tetri coins were first minted and put into circulation in 1995. They are still used for payment. Coins for circulation in Georgia are minted at the mint in Paris.

Coins with a face value of one to twenty tetri are made of stainless steel, and 50 tetri from the alloy of copper, nickel and aluminum. Georgia also has jubilee coins issued by the National Bank. They are produced both from precious metals (gold, silver), and from non-precious metals, which include cupronickel and neisilber.

Banknotes

The monetary unit of Georgia in the form of paper bills was used simultaneously with coins. There are two series of Georgian lari: old and new. The old version was released in 1995 to 2006, is in circulation to this day. On banknotes of this series, the nominal value is registered in Georgian as well as in English. In the course of the banknotes one, two, five, ten, twenty, fifty, one hundred and two hundred lari. In a limited circulation there were also bills worth 500 lari.

In 2016, a series of banknotes with a new design was issued. The exterior was changed from twenty, fifty and one hundred lari bills.

The monetary unit of Georgia. Rate to ruble and other currencies

The Georgian currency is much more expensive than the Russian ruble in the international currency market. So, the currency of Georgia to the ruble is estimated at approximately 23 and a half ruble, therefore, for one ruble you will receive about 0.04 laris.

As for the other currencies, for an euro, approximately 2.7 lari are given. The figure is, of course, approximate, as the quotes of currencies are constantly changing due to the cyclical nature and volatility of the foreign exchange market. For one American dollar is given about 2.5 lari, respectively, one lari is estimated at about $ 0.4.

Georgia's monetary unit is not very popular on the international market. This is due to the fact that Georgia does not have a strong economy, through it there are quite a few international trade transactions, and tourism, although developed, but the country is not included in the list of leaders in this industry.
