Exhumation - is it an outrage over burial or assisting an investigation?

What is exhumation? It is a term that refers to the extraction of a corpse from a grave or other burial site. A rather specific process, but it is carried out quite often. But, of course, not without reason.

Classification

Exhumation of the body, as well as many other processes, has its own classification. It was proposed in the distant 1966-th year. There are officially authorized exhumations, which are also called legitimate. These are those that are conducted with a forensic purpose because of the transfer of the corpse or the whole cemetery to another place in order to identify the buried person (these are cases that have nothing to do with the investigative or criminal investigation). And, finally, such an exhumation of the body can be carried out for historical or scientific purposes. This is the most extensive class. There are two more - this is accidental exhumation (ie, detection of the body during disassembly of the building or in the process of excavation), as well as criminal. The latter is usually carried out for the purpose of outraging the corpse, looting and, no matter how terrible it may sound, necrophilia.

Documentary provision

Exhumation is a very responsible and serious process, and, based on its specifics, it is documented in a documentary manner. The first step in the process of setting the process is to place the place where the body is buried. When exhuming, a forensic expert, a representative of the court or investigators, witnesses, a person working in a cemetery, and close people of the deceased must be present. A corresponding protocol is also drawn up. It denotes the place where the exhumation was carried out (this is most often a cemetery), describe a tombstone (sometimes attach a photograph), note in what state the coffin is located and at what depth it is located. The next step is to describe the contents of the coffin. All that is in it, must identify the relatives or friends of the deceased. The exhumed body is subjected to either a primary or a secondary autopsy. Often due to this it turns out to obtain very important information, which sometimes becomes even evidence in the case.

The occasion for

Most often, exhumation is a way to find evidence by exposing a corpse or re-identifying it. Reasons for its conduct is the presence of the body that conducts the investigation, information about the criminal burial. Also decide to conduct exhumation, if there was no forensic or pathoanatomical study. There may also be a need if the information obtained during the initial survey is incomplete or there are reasonable doubts about their plausibility during the investigation. And, finally, it may have been necessary to extract any items that were buried with the deceased. Often it turns out to find something that should not be in the grave.

The exhumations spoken about

There are such cases of extraction of a deceased person, about which for a long time after that they spoke. These include, for example, the exhumation of Nikolai Vasilyevich Gogol. This was done in order to transport the remains of the great writer to the Novodevichy cemetery. And how many rumors did the exhumation of Hitler, about which they spoke literally last year? Although, in fact, a little later it turned out that it was not the body of the Fuhrer, but simply a man very much like him. However, despite this, the whole expedition went to Brazil (it was there that Hitler exhumed, or rather his copies). A couple of years ago, even the idea arose to extract the remains of Stalin from the earth. But what would it matter to science - and have not found out, so the idea of this continuation did not have.

Preparation

Exhumation requires preliminary preparation. First, the goal pursued by researchers should be indicated. Secondly, we must determine how realistic it will be. We also need to remember that the buried body will not be the same as on the day of its burial - after all for a certain period of time it decomposes and undergoes other changes that may affect the course of research. They are both insignificant and quite weighty. It all depends on how long the body was in the burial place, what are its conditions (geographical and meteorological), where the deceased is buried (in the ground, in a funeral urn, in water or in a crypt). It is important even what things the corpse was wearing.

Law of burial

And, finally, a few words about how to re-bury the body, after the exhumation of the corpse was carried out. A whole law on the funeral business has been drawn up, which imposes certain ecological and sanitary requirements. It is necessary that a place with good soil should be chosen - it must be dry, and at least 2 meters deep. It is not permitted to bury a corpse where there may be a possibility of landslides and destruction. If there is a need, then it is necessary to conduct engineering training at the place where the burial is planned. And, finally, you need to choose a good coffin - either from wood, or from a material that is subject to the influence of mineralization. And, of course, this burial is fixed by the graveyard worker, indicating that the body was exhumed earlier. Of course, an ordinary person will not engage in all of the above - for this there are relevant authorities. However, one should know about the specifics of this process, all the more, if it is to be done.
