Choose a drain for flowers

Drainage refers to a system of removing water through the soil in which the plant grows. Why is it needed? The answer to this question is simple: any indoor plant for successful growth should breathe. If watering is abundant, water expels air from the soil, which causes the bacteria to multiply. The absence of oxygen in the soil can lead to decay of the roots. So, drainage for flowers is designed to remove water from the pot and allow all parts of the plant (especially the roots) to breathe.

Drainage is needed absolutely for all indoor plants. He needs to pay as much attention as to the more familiar fertilizer, lighting or watering.

The choice of drainage depends on the material and shape of the pot, its size, and the size and shape of the special holes in the bottom. When choosing a pot for a houseplant, pay attention to the holes. Remember that the higher and narrower the pot, the longer the soil dries.

Despite the fact that drainage for flowers should take place in any case, there are different drainage systems. So, for example, cacti and orchids require a system of rapid drainage, so they choose pots with a large number of holes. The pot is filled with a porous substrate. Plants that need constant moistening of the roots are planted in pots with fewer openings.

The need for moisture in each indoor flower is different, but they all love oxygen. To ensure that the holes are not clogged with earth, large pebbles are laid on the bottom, which allow water to flow through the holes.

What can be used as a drain for flowers?

There are a lot of options. Among the main drainage requirements are chemical inertness, resistance to mold, rot, good water permeability. Under these criteria, a huge amount of materials are suitable: gravel, rubble, and ceramic shards, and expanded clay, and broken bricks. Today, various synthetic materials (for example, styrofoam) are used for these purposes. So, in the pot with the holes put about one centimeter of the drainage layer, and only then the land, where the plant and planted.

The most common drainage for indoor flowers is expanded clay. It can be purchased at any flower shop, although it refers more to building materials. Claydite can be of different sizes, the choice of which depends on the size of the pot, flower and other characteristics.

The second most popular is the ceramic drainage for flowers. It is a shard of pottery, which are laid out on the bottom of the convex side up. On the ceramic drainage laid a layer of sand, and only then the earth.

Polyfoam is a lightweight material that also meets all requirements. You do not need to buy it: for sure, you have a pack of equipment under your house, and you can make a drainage for flowers with your own hands.

Very often, gravel, gravel and broken brick are used, as these materials are natural and resistant to damage.
